Was at Lowes to get some luan last night and they had two pallets full on Tuesday and by WED night had sold out. Some body must be building a lot of cabinets or whatever. Anyway, was able to get both shipping pallets for free. Has three real 2x2's and three real 1X6 all rough cut mohagany. Got them both, maybe you can do same where you are, might take a six pack to get the lumber managers attention to save them for you.

I've salvaged some decent pallet lumber before, BUT, I stopped doing this because it's time consuming to remove all the nails, and it's hell on my tools to clean it up. I learned quick after dulling and pitting a new set of planer blades.

Best of luck to you anyway.

All the drawer boxes in my kitchen are ex-pallets. Some seems to be Ipe, or Pau Lope, some seems to be Mahogany, and some is pure and simple mystery wood (AKA "treewood") It can be hazardous to the health of your planer knives, but with a little bit of preparation... I didn't hit any metal anyway...

Nearly free; I recently purchased three palletized bundles of Honduran. Lengths of 14'-16'. Two bundles were all 4/4 and widths to 5", the other bundle was 8/4 and 10/4, widths to 8".

Found it on craigslist.org. All for $100, I figure that wholesale it would have cost $1500-$2000. Like I said 'nearly free'. ;)

Now I just have to come up with something to build.

My dad used to get shipping crates from the local Kawasaki and Yamaha motorcycle dealers back in the '70's when he discovered they were made of teak. I think now they use farmed pine. He's still got some of that teak wood stashed away in his garage.

For Yamaha Outboard motors they are metal now. I made a pretty nice extra worktable out of one. Just threw a piece of plywood on top and good to go! They are braced nicely with diagonal supports. Check your local boat shop or Marina.

The heavy white oak whapper I use to massage aluminum weldments came from the rail of a pallet.I leave it ugly and roughsawn so that noone else will want it. Works better than the 20.00 dead blow mallet.
