Anyone know of a good website for marine diesel comparisons? I'm looking for a 4cyl 100hp for a heavy displacement cruising sailboat, and would like to do some reading to decide on what make/model to go with. The Volvo TAMD31S is one of the models I'd like to research more, as well as the Perkins M92. I've run a few Volvo's before and been happy with them, but have no experience with Perkins. Are there any 'consumer report' type sites that anyone knows of?
What other makes should I consider? Perhaps a Yanmar?

Check out www.boatdiesel.com (http://www.boatdiesel.com)
Also, when you evaluate what will be the best diesel for you, weight heavily the factors for availability of parts in your cruising area and familiarity with the make by the local marine diesel mechanics. It's great to get a bargain price on that slick little Ruggerrini air-cooled 20-hp motor until your local wrench tells you he can't get parts and doesn't read Italian which is the language of the maintenance manual.

Nah, forget Volvo diesel- absolutely worthless. Go with a Lugger ,the LP668D run it at continuous duty to get 105 hp. Bulletproof diesel with long proven track of reliability. Always spend the money for QUALITY! Regards, --Bill

Luggers...assembled in Seattle....in the smaller sizes use John Deere base engines.....and would be an excellent choice for a B.C. yacht.
But even without geographic proximity, I'll take a John Deere with parts dealers in many rural towns across North America to Volvos or Japanese spinners any day of the week.

Alaska Diesel Electric, Inc.
Address: 4420 14th Ave. N.W., Box 70543, Seattle, WA 98107, USA
Telephone: 206.789.3880
Fax: 206.782.5455
Product/Service: Lugger marine diesel engines 70 to 900 hp, soot trap and regeneration systems for marine engines
In fact, I'm changing the fuel injector nozzles for cleaning and the oil in the base engine for the Lugger L984D this morning....that engine is used in probably about a third of all the backhoes you see in North America. Love that John Deere.
