I think at last I've found a really good saw sharpening service - Needham Saw & Tool Service in Needham, MA (No surprise, I suppose.) Phone: 781 444 9215, located at 31 Central Ave (in back). Talk to Doug.

I'll let you know more after picking them (the saws) up.

The cat's pajamas... :D

Great job at $14/saw

I did a test:

Using a "Disston" 8pt cc saw new about ten years ago - 39 strokes.

Using "Poppie's" 10pt, just sharpened - 13 strokes

Using "The Bailey Company's" 8pt, just sharpened - 9 strokes.

(William M Bailey Co was SWMTMH's father's construction company.)

Skill 100 knives ~$23 for hs steel, ~$27 for carbide. I also bought a 24tpi carbide-tipped rip blade of German manufacture for Big Bertha - ~$16.00.

14 bucks a pop. At that price for me it would be better to do-it -yourself. It's not hard, all you need is a file and a saw buck ( easily made) and ya can do the job in less then 15 minutes. ;) But eventually you will need a saw set.

If I lived close by I would pay the $14.

Sharpening saws is one of the most tedious chores in the woodshop.

Then again I'm probably just lazy.

Some of the old-timers would do it while sitting around the stove in the shop and shooting the breeze... what their grand-kids would now call "multi-tasking."

LOL, while I certainly am considering learning the craft, I'm not about to practice it on my grandfather's ancient Disston, nor the two, not so old but old, one's that belonged to SWMTMH's father. ;)

Chad, it's too late now. smile.gif

Ed, did you see how they filed the handsaws?
Gotta watch it with those old saws and quick and dirty saw shops that use a grinder on 'em!

The old ones ie: Disston D-12, D-120, D-8 or Simmonds or E C Atkins don't do well with most saw grinders. Seems to draw the temper right out of that old London Spring Steel.

If ya found a good shop, super!!!
