I am shopping for a detail sander and need some advice on what to get. I'm stuck between the Fein Start (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005Q7BX/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_1/102-1218195-5786517) and the Bosch. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000302U5/ref=pd_ecc_rvi_1/102-1218195-5786517)

They seem fairly similar except the Bosch is variable speed while the Fein Start is not (I can't afford the VS Fein rigth now).

Anybody have any personal experince with the Bosch?
How important is the variable speed? (personally I think its a major feature when doing detail work)

thanks for the help,
dave

I actually have both. The Bosch never worked very well, and is more or less retired. We have two Feins at the moment. The action, which is a back-and-forth rotary motion--sands well, and I frequently have need of the saw and scraper attachments. This is actually the fourth detail sander I've owned, and so far seems to be the only one that sands effectively. It is variable speed, and since you sand using a small area of paper, it can sometimes be necessary. Most of the time it is left on high speed, however.

I agree. The Bosch just seems to vibrate. It takes forever for it to be effective.

I agree. The Bosch is not a useful tool.

From a conversation with a Festool rep, he said that the Festool detail sander was a better sander but that the FEin was more verstatile...for what thats worth. I think they also have different actions when sanding. I don't know the cost of either. I also think the paper for the Festool is cheaper.

Also you have to admit, there sure are a lot of happy customers using the Fein.

I was afraid I was going to hear this.

So now focusing on the Fein, how important is the variable speed factor? the price diff is $70 between the VS and the non-VS.

I use the highest speed on the Fein for most of the sanding, but I use slower speeds for the rasp tools and the saws.

FWIW, there's a $10 rebate on the Start, and a $20 rebate on the VS going on right now. When I bought mine, Coastal Tool (http://www.coastaltool.com/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/a/fein/femult.htm?L+coastest+qhpg1094ff644864+1121515998) was the cheapest source, although the freight to you might eat the difference.

yeah I think freight to me would bust the savings, and amazon ships free so its probably a wash.

thanks for the input, its my birthday this month, perhaps i'll just have to put the fein VS on the list (ive been good... well i haven't killed anybody).

thanks for the opinions.

I may be doing the math wrong, but it looks to me like Coastal can get it to you, in 7 days, for $226.50, delivered, compared to Amazon at $239.99 delivered. Amazon's not showing the rebate, and Coastal's freight to NoCal is only $7.50.

no, your right its cheaper with Coastal. i assumed it would be more from the east coast for an 8lbs box. i just hope the rebate lasts until my "loved" ones get into gear and order it for me,

i'll be so surprised on my birthday ;)

Yes, O&O, but the tool is $20 cheaper at Coastal, and freight is only $7.50. That's a $12.50 savings, enough for 1 extra piece of sandpaper. :D

I've been through that with Amazon. Read the fine print. I had to remind them that I've spent over $2K a year for the past 5 years at Amazon. They checked me out, and found that to be true, and sent me a $50 gift certificate. :D

The custom furniture shop where I work has one of the Bosch models, and it's crap. I can do detail work with wee scrapers and sandpaper faster and better. :(
