On the new WoodenBoat Store Catalog.

Especially the tools section, which has a bunch of new, thoughtful items.

Those of you who have been looking for a source for driver bits for your brace may want to check it out.

Also, there's a rabbet/chisel plane for under $50 that looks good.

Scot does a nice job, but more importantly, he's a nice guy, and we all owe him.

Cheers Scot!

I guess this is as good a place as any:
The brace sold (3 [jaw]) does not fit the bits sold (4 sided shank); am I right? Garrett Wade sells a 4 [jaw] brace by Stanley for same or comparable money... anyone care to offer a recommendation?

thanks,
Matt

I have the Stanley brace. It works, but it's no great piece of art. If I had to refasten a 40 footer, I'd invest in a nicer brace.

Scott, where would you go for a "better" brace? Is the one of the WB store better? Is a 3 [jaw] brace better because it can use round to hex bits... or is there a better 4 [jaw]? I'm wondering, because I am refastening this fall, and have lotsa old screws to pull - and I don't trust my drill or screwdriver. Thanks for any recommendations.

I'm wondering about the three jaw brace. I have three braces maybe four and they are all such to take the four sided bits. I'm wondering if one that only takes three sided ones is actually meant for round drill bits etc. I have assorted screw driver bits and many augers, all four sided. My braces date back to my grandfather and father and I don't have any new ones but they all work well.

Around here, you can get a decent old brace from a garage sale, flea market, or antique mall for $5 to $10.

Bits run maybe $1 or $2@.

Is there nothing similar in Maryland, Matt???

Lee Valley Tools aka Veritas (http://www.leevalley.com/) offers [what looks to be] a quality brace w/a 3-jaw chuck (http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.asp?page=32300&category=1,180,42337) that also deals with square shank auger bits: The three-jaw chuck, knurled for grip, accepts round shanks from 7/64" to 19/32" in diameter and all standard hex-shank bits. It also has the usual square-taper socket for conventional auger bits.

Looking at the add closer I think the three jaw will take the four sided bits. The jaws actually clamp on the round part of the bit and the end beds in below the jaw.
