Can someone tell me what these hammers were used for. There are iron bands on each end of the head.

The bottom one looks like a caulking mallet but the top one might be used by a cooper for driving bungs into barrels. Yeah, that's it. smile.gif

It's a "Beetle", sometimes known as a "persuader".
This looks to be a small one. Used to assemble post and beam structures, among other things.

Hughman's got it. The big one to drive the joints together, and the smaller one to drive the pegs.

There's a better example of the smaller one that I forgot to take a picture of. They are at a friend's house in northwest NJ. My friend's dad salvaged them from a barn that was being razed back in the forties.

Every circus and military hospital with those huge GP Large tents up thru the early 1980's also had them as part of their tent kits.

Another name for the Beetle, is Commander. Garrett Wade still sells one, with a 6 1/2# variegated Maple head, for $60. I have one back in Ohio, made from my woods, with a 10# Hop Hornbeam head and a Shagbark Hickory shaft.

When I built my barn I made 4 out of a log of beech, cut mortices for man sizes handles 1-1/2 x 3. Made the handles of oak rounded the edges and pegged them into the mallet heads. It took about an hour to make all 4, they ain't pretty but at 17 lbs they sure do a good job of moving things. Having 4 available was handy to reduce extra steps when working alone. Like a lot of my tools they got a name mine is Freddie as in Freddie Flintstone. :D They get lots of other use like the occasional rim on a vehicle that is rusted to the hub, one whack with Freddie and off they go with no damage to the rim. Lots of use when manuvering my 9950 lb balast keel :D The heavy wood mallet will move things incredibly better than a steel sledge will.

The small (2nd) one is a calking (corking) mallet. You drive cotton or jute into the spaces between carvel type boat planks. It's not for driving bungs.

Tom, that is the most sorry arsed excuse for a corking mallet I have ever seen!
I doubt it was used for corking.
Soft Steel rings, through rivets would have been an elbow killer and wrist breaker.
And the maul, the end rings were not put on correctly. Should have been shrunk on. You can see the sloppy fit with some lame attempt to wedge 'em in place.
