This is more of a rant than a question. Why are these goldurned things so expensive? Is making a dual voltage/highly efficient compressor that much more expensive? I just bought a dometic product 4.2 cubic foot and it cost 1000 bucks canuckian wholesale. Ouch. It does run beautifully though... and more importantly it fit in the hole I needed it to fit in....  :D

Worth looking at an ordinary domestic fridge, and an inverter-give you real electricity for all sorts of stuff.

Insulation is considerably different as is the compressor. An ordinary household unit may be about 20 percent efficient at best......most dc pump systems etc (read..BOAT STUFF) is considerably more efficient and really great especially if you are in an area of lotsa sunshine and have a couple of solar panels. Two each 65 watt panels and the appropraite battery system should keep an efficient system running night and day without running the engine....
