Passing along some interesting links about how to build your own celestial navigation equipment...

The first link is for a very simple sextant made from common stuff:

CD sextant project (http://www.tecepe.com.br/nav/CDSextantProject.htm)

The next one is a little more complex:

XTant project (http://www.tecepe.com.br/nav/XTantProject.htm)

The last one is a much more complex project to build a micrometer vernier sextant. Unfortunately, the site is hosted on geocities so you'll get their usual popups and other advertising garbage. Oh well, the site has interesting content:

Micrometer vernier sextant (http://www.geocities.com/richardandtracy/SextantPage1.htm)

BTW, I have no commercial or non-commercial interests in any of these websites. Just passing along the URLs for info that might be of interest to others.

Recently, in the New Bedford Whaling Museum, I came across several rather simple looking old sextants in their display cases. It seems that one can make a useful sextant out of wood with a few screws, bolts and other connectors and some markings. Thanks for the websites!
