I'm looking for some good books on how to rig and sail the 16' dory I built. I rigged it according to John Gardner's drawing but I'm thinking there must be a better way.

By the way, the boat is Gardner's Modified Swampscott Dory.

Bart, you should look at our own Todd Bradshaw's book Canoe Rig . Lots of very nice illustrations of small sailing rigs with different ways to get'er done, not just for canoes. More ideas than you'll need, I bet.

Also, have you looked at all the different rigs drawn by Gardner for the various sailing dories in The Dory Book ? Any of those ought to be adaptable in some form or another.

Bart,
WoodenBoat had an article titled "Sprit Rigs" by Ian Oughtred back in the '80s, part of a series on different rigs, that I found interesting and useful. Also, "The Sailor's Apprentice," by Emiliano Marino has lots of info on sprit rigs that may help.

Pete Culler's book _Skiffs and Schooners_ has some information on rigging traditional rigs including spritsails, and a lot of other good stuff too. Any thing written by Pete is worth reading.
