Can anyone tell me if there is a way to value an old boat? I have posted here about my 1967 Robertson, which is very good condition, but needs some cosmetic work. I am in the process of getting that work done.
I'd like to have an idea how much my baby is worth when I'm done.
Is there a blue book for old boats?
Thank you for your help.

Best opinion would be from a surveyor or perhaps experienced broker. An 'insurance survey' is less expensive though less comprehensive than a 'purchase survey' and would probably tell you what you need.
Market value in wooden boats is a wildly variable thing depending on so many whimsical factors that it really makes no sense, but try asking yourself honestly, "What cash would I put down for her?"

I said "honestly."
Half that amount you're mumbling.

I appreciate the suggestion, but when I checked with a surveyor about insurance he told me it would cost about $700. Until I feel I really want to sell her, I don't want to spend that kind of cash. Maybe later. I paid a ridiculacly(sp) low price for her, so I really have no idea. If I were very wealthy, I would definitely have paid more. I don't know. There are a lot of boats out there to choose from.
Thank you for your suggestion.

Does anyone even know of a place to look up what other boats have sold for in the past? That would at least provide a ballpark idea. I was going to suggest checking what other, comparible boats are listed for in places like the WoodenBoat classifieds but then I realized that what something is listed for could easily bear very little resemblance to what it actually sells for, if it ever sells! :D I suppose checking brokers advertisements might be a bit better guide since presumably a broker would tell someone to raise their price in the unlikely event that it was too low and try to address unrealistic expectations before spending money to list something that is way overpriced. Of course brokers probably mostly deal with the cream of the crop...

A friend suggested I just put it up a what I feel is a high price and see what happens. When/If I am ever ready to sell, maybe I'll do that. Right now, she's coming to California when my husband and I move there. I'm told they don't have too many old wooden boats out there. Hard to find a slip though, I'm told.
