View Full Version : Mahogany Lumber

Once again I find myself looking for materials that are not available locally.
Specifically, I need three pieces of Honduras Mahogany lumber, 6"wide by eight feet long. I need the lumber surfaced on two sides to be 5/8" thick. I do not have a planer and I have not been able to get a local cabinet shop to plane it for me. No one wants to mess with such a small job.
Does any one know of a place that can provide and ship the lumber I need? Preferably in the southeast to minimize freight costs.
As always thanks for any input.

When I did not have the equipment to do it myself, I could always find a shop that would plane lumber for me.
Steve Wall Lumber co can UPS the material you need at: http://www.walllumber.com/default.asp
There are surely sources or woodworking clubs in your area that can help you though. Adult education at community colleges often have woodworking classes.
There will be plenty of local planers available, you just have to get into the woodworking loop. In my area of a few thousand people, there are probably over a dozen planers in home shops.

Omerta: You are right 3/4 stock would be fine.
If that's available that would be great. Now if I could just find that!

Alan,
Have you tried Romac Lumber in Tallahassee? Their manager, who I knew, recently left for a west coast yard but I would think their special orders dept. could arrange that for you. If not, and you have to freight it in try:
Atlanta Wood Products Center
5400 Riverview Road
Mableton, GA 30126
800 964-7804
(ph) 404 792-0910
(fax) 404 799-2079
They're outside of Atlanta. If that doesn't work, email me and I'm sure I can help you out.

Miami Mike: I have tried Romac, so far they don't seem to be willing to special order such a small amount.
No problem with the Miami game. Although I work at FSU, I graduated from Miami!

Miami Mike: Since you mentioned RoMac, I decided to take another look. The last time I looked which was over a year ago, I couldn't find much.
However, today they had a pretty good selection. Its 13/16 thick, but I think I can make that work even without planing it.
At $9.91 a board ft. it seems a little pricey, but since I wouldn't have to have it shipped and since I can hand select the pieces I want, maybe its a good deal.
Thanks for the tip.

I have several hundred board feet of 4/4 mahogany from the re-build of my sailboat. My guys who used to be the main woodworking crew at Palmer Johnson in Sturgeon Bay would be happy to help you out. The lumber would be planed and sanded four sides to your needs.
Cost would be $6.00 per board foor figured on 4/4 lumber plus UPS.
As this is below anyone's cost, please do not heckle me for trying to make a profit off of this forum.
Just trying to help a fellow boat builder.

Alan I buy from Ozark Hardwoods in Pensacola, Fl.
Their phone # is [850] 941-0308

He has the material and tools to cut & mill to your spec's and does this at a VERY low cost.
A great person to deal with. The shop is very close to Interstate 10. Last exit in Pensacola on the west side.

Alan,
I'm glad you could track it down. If you ever have any trouble finding material in Florida please feel free to email me. I'm really just a lurker here and don't have much to add because of my lack of experience in boat Building but one thing I do know is hardwood lumber in the State of Florida. I've been in wholesale hardwood sales here for about 20 years.
Have fun with your project (I'm currently attempting a Penobscot 14).
