Can anyone suggest a reference or two that will show me how to rig a small boat with a leg - o - mutton sail, sprit sail, lug sail, etc.? I've found a fair amount of material on how to attach the sails to the booms/sprits/yards/masts, how to rig a snotter, etc. but I have no clue how to rig main sheets, travelers etc. - the running lines. A general reference with lots of pictures would be very appreciated.

Small Boat Sails by Jeremy Howard-Williams - a great little book on sails and rigging (and tuning, trimming and sailing etc!). It may have more info than you need, but it explains the “why” of it pretty well.

If you are interested in sailing, you need this book. Bolger is one of the most experienced and unconventional naval architects today, and he's very familiar with the history of sailing craft. He has experimented with old-fashioned rigs and with new-fangled rigs, and in this book, he tells us where they're appropriate and how to make them work. It may well be that your purpose is not best served by today's ``standard rig''. If so, you can find something better for you in here.
Table of Contents
Introduction: Crude Aerodynamics
Part 1: Cat Rigs. Twenty-seven single-sail rigs, including the guntersail and five lug sails.
Part 2: Sloops. Twelve rigs with one mast and two or more sails.
Part 3: Cat Yawls. Twelve rigs.
Part 4: Cat Ketches. Eight rigs, including the Zulu dipping lugger.
Part 5: Cat Schooners. Twelve rigs.
Part 6: Yawls. Seven Rigs.
Part 7: Ketches. Five rigs.
Part 8: Schooners. Six rigs.
Part 9: Three-masted Schooners. Four rigs.
Part 10: Square Rigs. Three rigs.
Part 11: Different Approaches. Four rigs, including what Bolger calls a ``kite sail'', two versions of a wing sail, and a rotor sail.
The Latest Edition
The latest edition adds three rigs, bringing the title up to 103 Small Boat Rigs. The most significant addition, for me, is Bolger's Chinese Gaff rig, a hybrid between the junk sail (a fully-battened balanced lug) and the traditional gaff sail. Unless you're specifically interested in that, you can probably be satisfied with either edition.

You guys are a BAD influence!
;- )
I picked up a used copy of _Small Boat Sails_ on Amazon for around $7 with shipping, but their price on the Bolger book used was $114! Luckily our hosts have it new for $25 in the Wooden Boat Store.
Not only do I need the assistance with rigging and various ways to set up mainsheets and travellers, but I'll be testing several positions in the bow for my quite different two masts & sail rigs.
Found a full Sabot mast, boom and sail on Craigslist for $75, so I'll use that for higher wind conditions. Plus I plan on either making or buying a spritsail for my heavier 13' mahogany mast, and will probably test a plytarp sail before commiting to canvas.

We must be chasing each through the electronic aether. I also bought a used copy of _Small Boat Sails_ through Amazon, was also shocked at the outlandish price they had for a used copy of the Bolger book, and also noted that the book was for sale through WB....I guess great minds really do think alike ;)

Iain Oughtred had a series of short articles on small boat rigs around WB # 76. One of them was on sprit rigs. You should be able to find which issue using the search feature for back issues on the WB website.

Oh ho -- well, I got the $3.95 one and you had to pay a whole dollah more for yours, right?

Just goes to show that it is always worth it to check the politically correct / local sources first. THEN go to Amazon....

Lots of exact details for literally hundreds of specific boat types in American Small Sailing Craft. Once you own this book its quite often the first one you pick up when you have a question such as this.
Regarding Bolger's Book: its excellent as well, but its all theory - albeit theory explained really really well, with very few examples of where various lines lead to, block locations, etc, etc.
