I'm building a Nutshell Pram and am looking for some 1/2" round bronze chaffing strip to attach to the bottom of the keel. Any ideas on where I can secure about 8-16'

Thanks all for your suggestions. I'll check them out. Gard

The canoe folks use this kind of stuff too. (I assume you mean 1/2 " , 1/2 round). Try the Wooden Canoe Historical Association, WCHA.com or maybe dot org. Let us know how these 8-footers get shipped, when you do find tham.

Bronze? Most people use brass for this purpose. Also, rather than half-round it is usual to use half-oval (this may well be what you meant). You can get brass half-oval from http://www.jamestowndistributors.com and http://www.hamiltonmarine.com

Jamestown and Hamilton's sell it in 6 and 12' lengths but the 12' lengths have to go truck frieght which would be very expensive relative to the cost of the material. So, 6' is probably the way to go. If could find 8' that might be a good way to go because 8' should be within UPS limits...

By the way, contrary to the usual rule about brass and salt water, brass half-oval seems to do fine and it has been used on thousands of boats...

I just noticed that Jamestown says the 3/8" and 1/2" half-oval can be coiled so you can get a full 12' length from them and have it shipped UPS.

Gard, Didn't catch which Nutshell your building. If its the 7' one I think you can do your keel with the 8'coil of half oval as it only goes up to the forward transom. You must be getting close if your at that point.

And don't forget to bend it to the right shape before you drill for the fastenings.
