portable drill guide

I'm looking for a portable drill guide, no luck finding one locally.... so I found this one at highlandhardware for $29. not a bad price

That one looks better than the one's I've used, which didn't do angles, and you had to remove the chuck from the drill.

Often the downward pressure leads to the drill moving off center a bit. It might work OK with some drills, but it is hard to determine exactly which one in advance, and you'd likely not want to buy a new drill to go with the unit.

Before I got my first drill press, I scouted around for rigs that I could use with my hand drills, mainly just to get a vetical hole. I didn't find anything I liked and just ended up attaching a guide stick into the side handle hole of the drill. I could line it up with a square or whatever. The same thing would work with a bevel gauge.

Now that I've got the press, I figure that if I ever have a need for an angled hole that I can't get to the press, I'll drill a block to the right angle, mark the centerlines and transfer it to the work.

On the guides offered, like the one from Rockler in an above posting, check for slop in the bearing which the chuck is attached to, as this can throw off accuracy.

My wife bought me that guide which Donn shows listed from Amazon at $37.00. It's awful. Since you can only set the depth adjustment on one leg, when you put any kind of pressure on the drill (such as when you are drilling your workpiece), the other leg bends, and there goes your alignment. I'll sell it to you for thirty bucks.

For a portable drill guide the Rockler would be the only one of the crop I would give shop room. If you are looking for stationary drilling guides then a quality drill press is your best choice. I have thrown out enough junk drill guides to have paid for the best drill press.

I'll agree with Garrett. I wasn't able to find one I felt was any good. I bought the $37 Amazon. It did what I needed it to do, but it is pretty cheesey.
