belaying pins are nice...either to restrain line from going somewhere else or for use as "noggin' knockers....
Turn the handles on a lathe....or you can pick a nice piece of wood...drill the appropriate size hole in the end to a depth of about three inches, then knock off the corners to eight sides...to 16 sides...carefully shape with rasp...clean out hole with cloth and acetone..let dry overnight, then put in epoxy and the threaded end of a bronze bolt, cut off the head, bull nose whats left....or cut off a piece of brass or bronze rod to the appropriate length, bullnose one end, cut a series pf grooves for a couple of inches on the other end using a three cornered file...and insert same in handle.....do it onna lathe or whatever.....do ya need drawings?...dimensions? what kinda boat?.....
Sometimes wood pins may be appropriate but on a larger boat the bronze bolt or rod trick makes them heavy enough not to jump outta the holes in certain circumstances....

You weren't using Google, Chuck.... smile.gif
Of the last hundred hits on our site, seven came from web searches for belaying pins. I won't say more here, but email me for further info if you like.

I've got a friend with about 20 lathes in his basement. I bet he could do it for you. No idea how much he'd want to do it, though. It would probably be pretty reasonable, though.

I bought a bunch of Ash belaying pins from the Bluenose II Store in Lunenburg. They also have Purpleheart.

Why not just buy a lathe and have a lifetime supply of any turning you want
Older cast-iron 36" Delta's are going in the 2-300 dollar range on Ebay...and a set of NOS Disston or newer Freud lathe tools for another 60-80 or so.
Child's play....if you've never turned, holler....I can have you turning out those simple pins within 30 minutes of coaching.

Bob's got the right idea here. I'd show you how myself but Bob's a lot closer. :D
Woodturning is really fun. All my kids have turned pens and pencils, even the 9 year old.
Paul Fredrikson drilled out almost the whole handle then epoxied an aluminum rod into just the tip of the hole. This left a hollow handle with a lightweight shaft. When dropped overboard they floated handle up, ready for retrieval. :D

He answers e-mail but gave up the forum to spend more time composing music. I wish he'd write more stories about sailing his Eun Mara. All I heard were a few stories of his first couple of outings.
I guess there's no water where you are headed Shane. Best wishes on the journey.
