It's gotta be a typo. It's a 36" or so. There's a gold mine of stuff out at Mare Island. Who knows what all. It was the West Coast's main naval shipyard since the 1860's. Why they closed it in favor of Bellingham, God only knows! Stuff has been selling out of there for the past few years. Same as Hunter's Point. They had lathes there that could turn a 16" Iowa class gun barrel. Probably sold for scrap value. Sigh...

Mentor Matt Escobar was specialty welder at Mare Island and he was able to get me on base when it was still active.

You should have seen the Pattermakers Shop!

Must have had 50 or so EMMERT Vices on lovely Maple benches.

All Oliver, Moak, Tannewitz machinery.

Yea, it's Bremmerton, not Bellingham... The base reduction program really did gut the maritime industry around here. The "anti-military" reputation is really a function of the local "fruits and nuts" in Sunny California, I guess. Don't forget, though, that Mare Island in Vallejo is a whole different world from San Francisco these days. What really killed the military installations in the Bay Area was the cost of living here, not the politics. Within a decade we lost the Presidio and its satellite bases, Moffett Field NAS, Alameda NAS, Hamilton AFB, Treasure Island, Concord Naval Weapons Center, Mare Island and Hunter's Point Naval Shipyards and a mess of lesser operations. A whole military establishment present since 1776 or so just disapppeared, leaving a huge civilian support system dangling.
