Whuts a bow light? Could an LED flashlight do the job?

There are a bunch of folk online selling the "Attwood Portable Navigation Light" for around $12-20. I've never used one, don't know how good they are.

sample hit: http://www.shootnhunt.com/catalog/JM/boat_lights_accessories/attwood/5300038.html

At a place like radio shack they should have the stuff you need to make up a led light powered by a flashlight battery. LED lamps are dirt cheap and come in red and green. A flashlight battery is 1.5 volts and they have lamps rated at 1.5 volts. I pay around 6 cents for lamps so the whole outfit should be cheap.

Your'e very low in the water in a kayak, I'd mount one on a stub mast behind the paddler

I don't think you need a bow light on a Kayak, I think you need a all around white light, should be mounted as high as possiable like the top of your head...

I agree that an all around white light would be more usual. Actually, I think most people follow the rule of having a white light (AKA a flashlight) on board to show in time to prevent a collision, and I'm pretty certain that this is perfectly legal on a kayak. Of course if you are in an area where lots of small power boats are zipping around at night a fixed all around light would probably be wise because it is hard to paddle and show a flashlight.

A headlamp might be another idea because you can point a headlamp to let someone know you are there while still paddling.

Shouldn't a light on a kayak be a stone lamp burning seal fat? NO.

You can't have your kayak and heat it.

thanks everyone, flashlight sounds good. swmbo says since i shaved my head i don't need to light that up and that one would be more appropriate on the bottom of my kayak anyway.

See Rule 25 d(ii) which is the same for inland and international:

"A vessel under oars may exhibit the lights prescribed in this rule for sailing vessels, but if she does not, she shall have ready at hand an electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light which shall be exhibited in sufficient time to prevent collision."

Down at the Bucks Harbor Market the lobstahmen refer to kayaks as "speed bumps." However, they don't pull traps at night.

How about one of those battery powered closet epoxied to a baseball cap?

Happy paddling
