Anyone know where to acquire irish felt to be used for bedding the lead ballast to the wooden keel timber?

A decent roofing supply house should be able to get some for you. It's not in common use any more, but still made. Pretty pricey, though - the last roll I bought cost me $75 CD and came from Belfast via LA.

How much do you need? Specifically, what length and width?

Really don't need much at all. It will be used for bedding the lead ballast of a Haven 12.5, so it isn't very much....10' x 8" or so.

Why use felt or paper at all? With a lead keel there is no interaction that deteriorates wood as with iron. Just scrape the top of the ballast smooth and put in a thin spackling of fibered roofing tar - $4.00/gallon. You'll need 1 gallon or less for a 12 & 1/2.

It will squeeze out as the boat swells - no problems - just scrape it off the first haulout.

Good Luck

Flounder Bay in Anacortes, Wash sells it in small quantities -- I bought some there last June. Do a search on it and it should turn up some old threads with phone nos etc.
