A customer of mine is a woodworker, and we were talking at the dealership a week or so back, and I mentioned I had always had an interest in getting a wood lathe. He said "I've got one I don't use, drop by and look" ... so I did, and it was one of those Rockwell Delta cast iron ones from 30 years ago or more, complete with stand, chisels, faceplates etc. I said .. How much? He said... fifty bucks... I said sold...!! :D
On a whim, I called an ad in the paper advertising lumber for sale... Ash, red and white oak, butternut, cherry, maple, and birch.
The guy gave me directions to his house just north of the city, and I drove out... turns out he retired from Nortel after 28 years, and has had 100 acre woodlot for a long time, and a small bandsaw mill. He built a very nice little kiln in his garage, and has a great shop, and out back a shed full of lumber.. maybe 3000 board feet or so on hand.
I bought some red oak and cherry #1 select, very nice stuff, mostly 1X6 and 1X8. The red oak was 2.50 bf and the cherry 3.00 bf.. and thats canadian. I will be back to see this guy.
It was a good woodworkin day. :D

Nice find Peter, I've had a lot of fun with my lathe. I started turning on one just like yours. Let's see some pictures after you've made some stuff.

I have the mid-sized Jet. It's the accessories that add up costwise, though. HSS tools are pricey - but don't need to be sharpened as often. And once you've used a Nova chuck you wonder how you got along without it.
Here's my lathe with a maple bowl on it:

You are close to Lee Valley aren't you? They are a great source for turning supplies.

Yup... about an hour down the road actually... and I get quite a few things from them so I always have the latest catalogue...
I saw an ad in the paper for a band saw... and bought it   today...
An older Rockwell 14"... seems like a good solid saw, with the cast neck as well as the stand and switch etc... 1 hp. Paid about 220 US for it.
I now have to borrow a trailer to transport the lathe and bandsaw home

You're on a roll, Peter!
What's Belleville like? I pass it on the way south, sometimes, but have never stopped. Sailboats on the signs...looks promising.
