Izzit me.. or are things going to hell in a handbasket. Boat U.S. has not always been the cheapest, or had everything on the shelf, but they were polite and willing to help. Since Waste Marine acquired them it's turned to crap. I went in today for a publication. The lady at the register asked for a card and I gave her my Boat U.S. Number...and she says it's not in the computer. I took out the card and showed it to her and she says "it could be fake, it's not in my computer". Good grief...who fakes a Boat U.S. card. On top of that she was rather snide and sarcastic. They obviously don't need my business and I swear to GAWD that I'll never darken their doorway again....

Unbelievable! Be instructive to know how management would have handled that. As soon as she accused me of "faking" a Boats US card, ( ) I would have refused to have any more to do with her and asked for her superviser.

Buying boating supplies from a national chain publicly owned company goes against every instinct I have.
Waste Marine/BoatUrasS makes it very easy for me to buy my stuff elsewhere, especially from the smaller, locally owned places. You see, around here, Waste/UrasS charges as much or more for its products as just about everyone else. For maintenance supplies, espcially painting and stuff like that, Waste charges more than double what Jamestown charges. With a little advance planning, I can go a whole year without setting foot into Waste.

I ordered lots of stuff from West Marine when I was building my boat. I allways got my orders within a week, and had great service. I may have had to pay more, but when you are building a boat, it is sometimes better to pay more for a product than to wait an extra week or so for it.
I was ordering stuff from Defender, but they were frequently out of stock, and made mistakes with orders. When I called them to tell about a mistake, they acted as if it was my fault. I asked them to send the corect item, but they wouldn't untill I returned the item thay sent my. I had to send it ups ground, that was the only way they wouls axcept it, even though it would have cost half as much to mail it. they finally sent me the corect item after two more weeks, and never offered to pay me back for the shipping. I gave up on them.
I have had one experience with Jamestown Destributers. I ordered about $20 worth of screws and stuff from them online, and 9 days later they called and said that my credit card didn't go through. I told them to try again, and it worked. Later, I e-mailed them and asked if it regularly took 9 days to procces an internet order, and I was told that thay normally shipped within 24 hours of recieving the order, no appology or explanation why my order took so long.
It's hard enough to decide what you need a week ahead of time, but 2 1/2 weeks to get a bunch of screws was inexcusable.
Hamilton Marine has always been good to me.

I took out the card and showed it to her and she says "it could be fake, it's not in my computer".
Good grief...who fakes a Boat U.S. card?.

Now that's interesting. We order from Jamestown about once a week, and if the order isn't coming through the door two days later, we wonder what happened. Max elapsed time so far has been three days, except once when a box of nuts was accidentally delivered to the neighbors. A few times it has been the NEXT day. Can't ask for much better than that. Must have been having a bad day with you.....

The last couple of Jamestown orders came the next day. They've never messed up an order for me yet.

Jamestown was always good to me. I don't know if they still do it this way, but when I had an account they didn't have an elaborate system of keeping accounts up to date, or checking on one's credit rating etc. It was simple. Pay on time and you still had an account. Miss one payment, and you no longer had an account. Good Yankee sense. :D

...back on topic, I too have noticed a decline in the general demeanor of the BoatUS staff and their level of service. At first I attributed it to the fact that I was being a pain because I was on the new boatowner's discount plan, and further because I never set foot in the store without needing to special order something by the time I left. Then I wrote their crabbyness off to the crazy spring commissioning season, but what's their excuse NOW?
The same people that were once cheerful and helpful (occasionally to a fault) are now generally grumpy and disconnected. Interesting to hear that this might stretch beyond this one store.

Waste picked up anoher local store here, Discount Marine, and their atitude went to hell. I'll use Boat US/waste-version only when I need something now, and so far they've been courteous and happy to help. Until a couple weeks ago, I've never had a problem with Jamestown after years of using them. They double-filled my screw order, and double charged me, but I'll hang onto the second shipment anyway(just in case).

I only use Waste Marine when what I want can't be bought at Boater's World or when I get a gift certificate. Yes they have a bad attitude but I think it's part of their training program.

I've never heard any other complaints about Jamestown Distributers, my experience was probably a fluke. I understand that companies do make mistakes, my only complaint was that I never got an apology for the way I was treated. I probably would have stuck with them if I would have gotten some sort of explanition or apology.

I've had great luck with Boater's World- they will happily order just about everything, including outboard parts and other things you would never imagine they had. The prices seem to be better too. But most of my larger or planned purchases go online. I really like McFeely's for screws- super service.
