Does anyone have experience with Hayward's Clipper Canvas sail cloth? (also see "Sail Cloth" post for details).

Bernadette & David:

You might want to talk to Michele Stevens. Michele's family has been making cruising sails for about a hundred years, literally. In fact, if it's not too late, ask Michelle for a quote. She is familiar with Hayward's cloth as well as Oceanus. She's going to make my small sails out of Hayward's Sunwing Classic. Her quote for my Caledonia Yawl was very good.

B & D,

Sorry. I just saw your location Down Under. I guess a sailmaker in Nova Scotia would be a bit too far away.

Wayne, thanks for the advice and help. We had thought of getting our sails made in the USA or UK but with money exchange, freight and customs duty it makes it a little expensive if the original quote is a bit expensive. We would dearly love to have them made by sailmakers who deal with traditional gaff sails and the such like, more than anything else! Anyhow, we will still contact Michele in the hope that she can impart some information about Clipper Canvas. The more we research the more we pray and hope that we are making the right decision because the cost of our sails here represents about $10 K AUS. Thanks again anyhow! Bernadette and David

Bernadette and David,

Here are the numbers for sails for my little balanced lug main and mizzen. Narrow panels, vertical cut, all hand finished rings out of 6oz Bainbridge cloth. I don't know how much extra the Hayward SunWing Classic will cost. Don't care, I just want it. Michele Stevens suggested using it. As did Todd Bradshaw. That's good enough for me.

US made sails: $1,760USD or $3,160AUD
Nova Scotia sails: $1,810CDN or $2,133AUD

Quite a difference. And Michele and her father and her grandfather have been making gaff rig cruising sails just about forever. And she answers her phone and emails promptly. She gave me a quote promptly as well. I can't say the same about some sailmakers who haven't answered my inquiries after a month or two.

Good luck and happy sailing!
