I'm adding a boom vang to my boat and am using a bail, a fiddle block with cam and becket, and another fiddle block with two sheaves, for a 4:1 purchase. The blocks are Harken carbo air blocks. I saw Harkens web site and they showed some possible setups that look suitable for my boat: (http://www.harken.com/rigtips/vang.php) so that's what I decided to go with. Nice stuff, but it doesn't exactly look traditional or classic. What do you guys do for fittings like this on your boat? Do you just buy the standard stuff and forget the less than classic look, or do you hold out until you find more traditional fittings.. the blocks I got look like they should be on an America's Cup boat, not my little wooden boat. The boat was built in '89 so it's not like I need to match up to existing older wooden blocks. All the other blocks are Schaeffer. I'm just looking at it and wondering if there were any other alternatives. I see bronze blocks out there but not bronze fiddle blocks with two sheaves and a a cam cleat that would be suitable for a boom vang. I haven't seen enough pictures of vang fittings out there to really know what other people's wooden boats are like so feel free to post pics smile.gif . I don't have a bail yet, maybe I could find someone to make it for me out of bronze. Is it common to have fittings custom made?

most wooden boats don't have those new fangled vang thingamabobs anyway, they just use heavy solid booms and/or aft travelers... :D
You can probably find some in brown Micarta which will look 'better' than the Harken versions. Though they will likely have aluminum sharp edged cams, and may not be as smooth.
There are other poossibilities as well. But before we all start posting advice, how 'bout some info from you: What type, design, and size of boat? It would help in answeirng the questino.

Tufnol blocks from the Wooden Boat Foundation in Port Townsend, WA.
Tufnol blocks (http://www.woodenboat.org/store/folder_alternate.asp?f=216)
They have the fiddle with becket and cam. I know, that's where I bought mine.
Similar to this, but the cam cleat is non-adjustable.

Those Tufnol blocks are much better. The boat is a 24' cold molded Carol designed by Chuck Paine, double ended sloop. There is a pic of here (http://www.woodenboatclub.ca/members'_boats_p5.htm) .
You can see there is no boom vang in that pic. I don't know why the builder never put one on. The hatch slides right up to the mast though and it might interfere with blocks. There is a padeye at the bottom of the mast which I can use.

Thanks for the pics guys. Canoeyawl, I like what you've done with the bronze band. Looks nicer than a bail and stronger too I would assume. Did you make it yourself? I suppose I could make a template and get someone to make it for me. Port Townsend Foundry might do it, I'd have to enquire. And I think I'll get those tufnol blocks. I also need to have some sort of bow roller made that goes off to one side. The builder just anchored from the stern but it's no good. To anchor off the bow with the very high bulwarks, I have to put it through the hawse hole, then loop it over the top, and watch the brightwork.. time consuming too. Same at the stern but less room. It's going to kill me to start carving out that pretty caprail though. Glad the builder left some things for me to do though, it's great.
Venchka, interesting you saw the boat for sale at a broker because I bought it from the owner. Didn't know one was involved at some point. The boat is well loved smile.gif .

PT Foundry said they can make a bail similar to the one in canoeyawl's pics. I'm trying to make a template but I'm not sure how to determine the curvature of the boom where the strap will come from the underside of the boom and wrap around up the sides. I'm going to have a long piece on the bottom of the boom running fore/aft, and then have a strap come part way up both sides of the boom. Any ideas of how I can capture the curve of the boom (the corners are rounded)? I was thinking of a blending spline but I haven't seen any that small with that tight of curve.
