View Full Version : How to build an Aft Deck?..

Hope you can help and point me in the right direction.

I am building the Cape Henry 21 (Dudley Dix design) that incorporates an outboard well in the cockpit.

I am wanting to build an aft deck (ply and teak ) to house the outboard well. I envisage it would be full width and also have a hatch to access the outboard and the space either side(storage).

I have looked through all my books, magazines etc trying to find some construction details/ideas on how to build an aft deck.

So I am looking for any books, articles, advice etc on how to build the deck.

Thanks in advance.

cheers

Charles Wittholtz had a 22 foot cat boat with that layout in it. One problem with the enclosed well, is getting enough air in it, to keep from fouling the plug out, because of the improper burn. Make sure the motor is down far enough so you can pick up the water below the full round of the boat.

Dudley has a little writeup in the latest Watercraft magazine about this design. It's a scaled up Cape Cutter 19. Wouldn't that make the cockpit really small? Send him an e-mail and ask him. dudley@dixdesign.com

Steven.

Yes it will make the cockpit smaller, but with the outboard sitting in the cockpit anyway the cockpit seating is unusable anyway.

I fiqured that with an aft deck I would actually have more usable space as the aft deck makes a great place to sit on whilst helming and it would increase my storage capacity as well.

Noise levels would be greatly reduced as well. I would need to design sufficient ventilation for the outboard such as a vent etc...

Keep the great advice coming.
