What can you guys tell me about the Brazillian Yanmar motors?

They have a BM series motor that looks like a nice little air-cooled diesel w/ gearbox but I can not link to any price or distributor info for them.

Are they reliable? Good service? Any infor will help.

Thanks,
dave

They are basically immortal, and indestructible. No kidding. There is no lack of illiterate and slacker-assed fishermen who have tried to destroy them, through lack of maintenance and running them wide open all the time, and still they live.

One of my early boating experiences was with a little wooden boat with a BM-11 single-cylinder engine. A dream. Runs like a clock, as we say down here.

BM-18's are very popular, and with good reason.

Dalia has a Yanmar 76hp - alas, a Jap-made one, since they don't make the narrow sailboat models in Brazil, and Dalia's narrow wineglass aft sections would accept nothing fatter...

Now, I must say, they are NOISY! But when you hand-crank one, it is a pleasure to hear it come to life!

obrigado george,

sounds like a good endorsement. i wonder how hard they are to get in the US, and what about parts and service? i may need to send them an email.
