what ever happened to a man named cleek-used to be her a lot-good source of information.also-rivets/roves -i'm building the 10' dory tender in j.gardner's book an i'm not sure what size to use or where from.an 1/8" seems to me to be plenty -i need a good source for same. standard fastenings and jamestown dist are limited .-and last-the text in the book says bottom is a max. of 19 1/2"--i have 18 1/2" at station 6 .where is the missing inch?-has anyone built this little boat or can anyone offer some insight --thanks and good night--hank woll

Oh, I'm here... Gee, it's nice to be missed! LOL Check out John Leather's "Clinker Boatbuilding" book. There's another one or two called "lapstrake boatbuilding" or some such. They have schedules in them for the size of the nail and the size of the rove corresponding to the thickness of the plank. I recall that there is a different schedule for hardwood vs. softwood as to the size of the roves corresponding to the nails, I think. Surprised me when I read it. I haven't built your boat, of course, nor done any riveting in a while, but perhaps the reference to the source might help you out. (Jamestown Distributors just came out with a new catalog. They may have the size schedule in there. There may be one in Davey and Co's catalog, too.)

Hank - I just pulled out my copy of The Dory Book and I can't figure out where the missing inch went either. I wonder if the inimitable John Gardiner made a mistake. At first I was going to say that he was giving you the actual width of wood you would need to make the bottom, since the top side of the bottom is wider than the bottom, but then I checked and saw that the offsets are to the inside of the planks and the inside of the bottom so that can't be it. If the lines are fair and if no one else can figure out where this inch went I wouldn't worry too much -- the comment about the bottom being 19 1/2" wide is in the text not on the plans, and anyway, if the lines are fair, and true to the offsets, the boat should come out right...

Hank, go back and read the offset table very carefully, then look at the construction drawing. The offsets are to the "inside planking, inside bottom .....". The previous page shows that the boat is being planked (clinker style) with 7/16" cedar planking. With round-off, there is where the extra inch comes in. And remember, pictures are always appreciated.

I was thinking the same things as Puget Sound at one point but if you look at the cross-section on page 251 that shows the construction details, it is apparent that the garboard strake is at such an angle that it's bottom outside edge is actually closer to the center of the boat than the top edge of the bottom boards, where the offsets measure to. So, the actual width of the bottom, in fact, appears to be somewhat LESS than the width of the bottom boards (i.e. the width given in the offsets)...
