I have an old dinghy for which I found a nice sprit sail rig. The mast steps into the floor of the dinghy and then into a U shaped receiver on the foredeck. The arrangement allows for easy stepping of the mast while the dinghy is afloat, but I need to construct a mast gate which will close around the mast and firmly hold it in place under sail. I have some ideas, but I thought I would check if somebody out there might have some suggestions.
Thanks

Had a rig like that once. A cleat on either side of the mast on the foredeck, just foreward. A length of 1/2 inch line and a leather sleeve that rode on the line to protect the line from rubbing on the mast. Works well on light rigs, allows the mast to rotate if it's not squared at the step(increases efficiency), it's simple and quick and cheap.

The cleats and rope was one of the ideas I had, but the leather sleeve is a nice touch. Thanks.
