Ok, I'll admit this isn't strictly a wooden boat question but you folks are the smartest people I know and I'm hoping you'll get me pointed in the direction. I haven't been to see the boat yet but thought some research would help.

One of my doctors here at work recently bought a tupperware boat (against my advice ;) ) and he's got a weird problem. It seems that the fuel pump continues to run when the key switch is turned to the off position. I said it was a bad switch but the gauges that are wired to the same post on the switch shut off.

The excitation post on the alternator is wired to that post as well.

Anybody got any thoughts?

I found a wiring diagram for the engine, I think and possibly a glow plug switch although he says there's a "glow" postion on the key switch.

Maybe the diagram will show below.

Dave, there was a discussion about this just a little while ago. Here is a link to that:

Bottom line it seems like this is a condensation problem.

Chad, thanks for the suggestion. As it turned out the problem is in one of the wiring harness connectors. I believe there was enough corrosion in the connector to increase the resistance and during a high load situation, motoring at night with all the lights on the current caused excess heating and melting. There's a short between a couple of the wires. Disconnecting the wire to the alternator made the fuel pump stop running.

The solution, in this case will be to rewire harness on the motor, the instrument panel and the extension harness in between.
