Okay so I posted this down below as Im preparing myself in many ways {dont sweat it its still awhiles off} but one of the things I want to do is get her name down pat as an inspiration and motivation sort of thing... how does one say "water", "peace", "evening" and "child" in Norse?

No Im not shutting the gate after the horse has bolted since it could still be anything Im just tryin to nail down a few words and see which way they sound and fit best.

Also looking for a nice Gaelic sign to put on the sails any suggestions?

Water - vann (current Norwegian), vatn (old Norse)
Peace - fred (current), frišr (old Norse)
Evening - kveld (current Norw. and old Norse)
Child - barn, born (from bere, to carry, i.e. that which has been carried)

Was hopin to get Woden in there mate... for Wednesday since that seems to be the one day of the week when theres no hoons about and I get free range in the shed so I reckon that will be me build day... like that guy who built Ougtreds Grey Seal and called it "Saturday Morning" cause that was the only time available to build... mines gotta be Wednesday and I kinda like Woden but what with it?... "Woden's Barn" {Wednesdays child} doesnt twig does it and as for "Wonden's Kveld Barn" {Wednesdays Water Child} is a tad of a mouthful right? so what then?

aaahhh she'll come to me!

If I ever have a son, I will name him Thor. :D My father wanted to name me Wolfgang, but my mother would have nothing of it smile.gif

Of course, Wednesday being Woden's day,[and Woden being a Germanic, Anglo-Saxon cognate of the Norse father of the Gods, Odin] you would be ending up with some rather mixed mythology...

Would not 'Woden's barn' be Odin's child, Thor? [as TimH suggests]

Anyway, the old nursery rhyme suggests a different tack might be better

"Monday's Child is fair of face
Tuesday's Child is full of grace
Wednesday's Child is full of woe..."

And we don't want a boat full of woe, eh?

Remind me what you're building, Shane? An Oughtred design? Perhaps a guid Scots name might work?

cheers
Derek

Didnt miss anything Mike... Im in the processes of finally deciding... yeah yeah Ive been sayin that for what? shite a couple of years so far! Talk about Mr. Procrastination! But this time Im seriass!! yes indeedy I am takin motivation and encouragement from Bernadette and David along with Daveflatsboat and others... I just gotta start ASAP!!

Im waitin on the arrival of a final set of plans drawings from a good rightsideupian mate and then its get them out sort through them all and selection time..

Its just gotten too bloody confusing each time I think Ive decided some one else tosses something else into the flamin mix and away I go again! Its time to sort it and be done... so as Ive said Im waitin on one more thing then its time.

I did say it was awhile away yet! still have to move house, tool up a bit more, price out the final plans etc etc

but!! Ive almost done with the snakewood flag pole thingy {jackstaff?} Ive got my younger brother onto the anchors {making 2 different sizes and styles as per the plans Chuck sent me awhile back... hes got the ruddy welder so he can make em! } My sisters girlfriend is making some other bits up from plans Ive found here {thanks all!} in Broome... and Ive made a few other bits and bobs and hopefully will make more now the weathers gone to crap and darkness falls around 5.30 - 6pm... I only have a quick window during the week and even less on the weekends ergo thats where Wednesday kicks in... some of which items may or may not be of use depending on where that final finger lands tongue.gif

That saying about Wednesdays a bit of a worry aint it? Odin would probably work I guess... aahhh the gaelic now thats not a bad idea! I remember a fellow forumite once told me about a gaelic name mmmmm must jog this memory of mine and try to remember who it was and what that name was!

No worries Odins Hammer may do it eh? nah not quite gotta play around with it a bit more yet...

Oughtreds Grey Seal is one of those in the mix along with Crowninsheilds two designs Elly and a few others should equal about 8 or so by the time the one arrives and a bit of culling happens then its put em on the table stick a blindfold on and do the eenie meenie thingy

The mix will have a mix of styles and modes of building just to confuse me a bit more and maybe I will end up just doin that eenie thing a few times taking out a few until its down to just a couple then a final deep breathe close the eyes and say "damn it your it!" :D

Thanks fellas

ooh having the name should invoke the power of me mushy stuff to do it once its named I own it and my mind will force me to recognize that its time to 3D it.

Wonden's Kveld Barn = Odin's/Wednesday's Evening Child, not "water"

How about a tribute to Henrik Ibsen's plays: Et Dukkehjem = "A Doll' House" or "Hedda Gabler". Hedda was a strong, independant, and fiesty woman!

One of my boats is called "Valhalla"

Dingo, I thought of a pun on the French for Wednesday, it's "Mecredi" but you could call your boat "Make ready"

No offense to the Norse gods, but I've been mulling over the By-names list from a previous responder, and considering the Dingos writing and deeds with wood. The name ought to reflect a bit about the builder, so I think

SKALD (poet/saga-teller) for the Dingos lingo;

EIK for his skaldish way with wood; and

BAARN since the skald made the child.

Skaldeikbaarn

Maybe too long, but something to work with

BTW: The she-oak clock is really neat, but my first thought when I saw it was "that'd be a beautiful samson post for the boat."

Skaldeikbaarn ;)

mmmmm will mull it over a bit mate! thanks for the suggestion

As for the sheoak mantle clock...turned out right fine in the end she was mightily pleased was the possumpoop  ...Im presently making a couple of things out of Sheoak and Jarrah with an Tuart insert no metal at all just dowels and such to hold them together... another coffee table with a Tuart insert which is starting to look the ducks knuts a thingy for a boat with the thermometer clock and barometer things on it out of Jarrah mainly damned if I know the name of the ruddy things... along with a number of other items... sorta totally made of timber...

Plan is to whack en up on Ebay... wonder how that will work with the frieght from here to up there? see the sheoak should make it worth more up that way than down this way so mmmm... cogitating

Actually as I get doing all this Im getting "orders" from the girls out in Kal along with my brother out there and my sisters up in Broome damned if I know how Im gonna snuffle time to make stuff to sell let alone a ruddy boat!

For example... Yaz decided upon seeing the coffee table that she not only wanted one but she also wants a china cabinet for her 21st in January... which also meant that Melissa now wants a china cabinet a tv cabinet and a few photo frames... Tiffs order is for a dining table and a cabinet for all her trophys!! strewth that girl doesnt muck about! Aaron so far just wants me to finish the dinghy that sits miserable out the front... Scott my younger brother has asked for a coffee table 4ft x 5ft for their new house and a library... younger sis Kree in Broome wants an artists stool thingymajig and bigger sis Vick wants frames of varying sizes and an easel her life partner wants some mallets! So tell me when Im gonna get a chance to build something to sell? mmmm or even get a start on a boat!!

Sheoak I have decided is simply too stunning a timber to be using so Im gonna go back to plain boreing Jarrah after this is all gone.
