Forumite Charles Gresham found this note on the bulletin board at work, and thought the forum would find it humorous...I sure do!

Hmm, wonder if it was intentional or accidental?

Hmmm. I wonder. I had a friend who used to go snake hunting (as in poisonous water snakes)on the Roanoke River in North Carolina. He tells a story on himself, which involves a pile of dead snakes on the floor of his boat. Apparently one snake is only mostly dead, and in the ensuing melee to hasten the reptile's demise, the boat ended up with several holes in the bottom. That note reminds me of his story.....

We'll need info on the hull's construction to get an idea of the difficulty of repair....

Chuck's in South Carolina, right. Lemme guess, a guy was fishing in the river one day when he drifted under an overhanging limb, which scared the snake who was sunning himself on same. The snake (probably a harmless banded water snake) decides to head for the safety of the water but is instead surprised to find himself lying in the bottom of a boat. The other occupant of the boat is selfish and doesn't like to share his space on the boat with anyone, especially snakes. Without much thought, he grabs his trusty 12 ga. and gives the snake the ulimate sanction. Now the occupant of the boat troubled by the thought of whether or not that snake has any kin in the water.

Beer drinking and duck hunting is my guess. It has to be accidental,no one would shoot a perfectly good wooden boat on purpose. :D Besides, if he was trying to kill it all he had to do was burn it. Sounds like Elmer Fudd's been shooting at Daffy Duck again.

Looks like we will have to let you blokes in on a little secret.
To catch fish here in the land of OZ, we use a really thin and reeeaaaaallllyyyy long piece of plastic with a bit of sharpened metal wire on the end on which we place a smelly bit of mullet gut, or chicken gut, or prawn, or worm or ..... and throw it in the water :D

While the "snake theory" is a common cause of holes being added to the bottom of boats, they're not specific about the damage, and you're overlooking the popular southern backyard beer drinking game of "Set-Your-Beer-Bottle-On-Anything-Flat-And-Shoot-At-It" :D :D

This reminds me of the story not too long ago about a guy who accidentally blew away his computer shooting at a burglar with his shot gun. He made a police report to make an insurance claim and the investigation later showed that he really just lost his temper while playing Tomb Raider.

For $3500 bucks that's gotta be some rare 12' boat, especially after having been customized with a 12ga.

I did know a guy, Lem Ayers (he's dead now, so the statute of limitations has run), who shot at a snake in the bottom of his FG Ranger bassboat with a .22 pistol. When the gunshots startled his dozing partner to wakefulness, the partner beat the snake to death with a landing net. You'd a thunk an old timer like Lem would have known how hard it was to kill a snake with a .22!
My dad, an old South Carolina boy himself tells of drift fishing down the Edisto river as a teenager and having a snake land in the bottom of their boat. Despite being about twenty feet from shore in over 4' of water at the time, he swears the next thing he remembers was standing on the bank, completely dry.

Well I just found out that it was all just picking on a part-timer here in the building. He is an inept(sp?) duck hunter. Still pretty funny I say.

I work w/ a guy who put a bullet through his dash and into his engine block when his hunting rifle discharged inside the cab of his truck...
Another fellow who had retired before I got there was running cable to the TV antenna and fished it up into a closet on the second floor. Needed to drill a hole in the roof and thought, hey, the pistol will work, Went in the closet, closed the door and fired up.... .45 made a real nice hole in the ceiling and a huge hole in the roof, plus he couldn't hear for a couple of days!!! You don't wanna know any other stories; you'd never fly again.

Mate of mine left the windows down on his ute (pickup) after an overnight rain he found she had about 4" of water in her so out came the 22.... 1 shot either side did the draining very nicely thank you!
