Can't say I had a bad year, about 4000 offshore miles and about 40 days inshore.

Me too, though the boat is smaller and I'll sail off the beach. Happy new year as well I guess.

I'm doing the extended family thing. Its the big gathering down in Kirsty's home town in the South Island. Christmas and New year there. It'll be loads of fun and I get to wander around looking at some different boats .

A new year on land... doesn't sound very safe to me. People are always a lot more careful when they get wet if they fall down. Gee , I'm not so sure about this now...its like we're setting a precedent.I hadn't thought about it until I wrote the post.

on the positive side, and this is a secret and I don't want anyone like say for example, My Wife to know. ( I'm thinking about cap'n Pre Capsize's post about the christmas voucher here IE " you're not bringing that laptop on the boat")

I have been dewired. Yes folks its true. this year it will be a real time broadcast from the decks of the Waione as we crouch for cover from the predicted tropical lows/bask in paradise.
technology meets joined together wood and sailcloth.
arrrrrrrrr

So I'll wish you a happy new year real time Sku

Gareth, you still owe us some sailing adventure tales there. Been waiting. ;)

Stu, last year that was a miserable day and it got worse for the next two as I recall it. we waited out a wind warning and watched it howling 40 plus across the mouth of the bay we were in. We finally left the bay at about 7 or 7.30 on christmas eve to go the 25 miles approx up to the next anchorage. The wind had dropped but the chop was there.

Then up early christmas day to make the long day passage to the next cover up the coast. It was to take advantage of a weather window. The wind went to the north after that and held several of our cruising buddies trapped back in port as the next system went over. Luverly after that though and we, well we were sitting in the Bay of Islands. ;)

Just in case I get busted, I have to say that the primary reason I have dewired the laptop is for weather forecasting. This year we're in a negative la nina/ el nino pattern and this makes us susceptible to the tropical cyclones that form up around the north of Australia and cruise through the equator from west to east. When there isn't a strong weather system in place here, the cyclones drop down and head our way.( tropical lows) The last serious cyclones ( they're only NOT called cyclones because weather terminology doesn't allow it below a certain latitude) that have hit us here have all been in this 'negative' type of year.
We were out when Drena and another came through within 2 weeks of each other back in 97. There was outrage from the boating community at the time because our local met service withheld the information that these things had formed and were tracking this way . The met services mandate at that time was to deliver marine forecasts only to a 24 hour period. The information that these things were coming got around by word of mouth literally( someone picked it up from an A.M radio station)

Which way you gonna head when you get back, John B ?
Hey Shamus how's the D'Entrecasteaux at this time of this year ? Or are you heading out around Maria to watch the Syd-Hob boys ? Looks like they could be off to a slow start this year!

Back. How inconvenient... someone wanted to speak to me and no matter how many times I said " tell someone who cares" they insisted on real business conversation. THEN,.. I had to rush out to a restoration function, a BBQ, to talk boats/wood/gaff rigs/ deckbeams/motors/admiration for long gone yacht designers and builders/philosophy/madness/ etc

so,... where woz I. weather.. the 'tropical lows' aka cyclones in normalpeoplespeak are actually due more like march but thats my story an I'm sticking to it.

and yerrrrs , the de wiring. You pays your money and you gets your mobile high speed data card which plops into the yadayada port on your laptop. The flat skinny one port.
Of course, I have no idea how good the coverage will be but I know how to find out.
Johnno, we're leaving Auckland and we're going either north, east or north east depending on a.where foursies is most likely to be.
and b.which direction the wind is.
the coro/barrier/kawau circuit .

Shamus, I had a text from Jamie and Nikki the other day. They're off to the western side of Tassie but probably via your way. Look out for Lion Class boats!

Stop it - I say stop it - I started a new job today! Believe me if I say there's lots to do. Staff keep asking me what I know about the business ..... ??????? Why let mere details get in the way of having fun eh? Isn't any business about people?

Enjoy your Main Island experience John. Who knows - maybe next year we'll let you visit the West Island for Christmas.

Peace to all.

John R - channel gets a bit crowded these days, but still nice. I'll be at least listening for Sydney boats, I've got two nephews on something called 'Torpan International'. Something vaguely reminds me of paint about that name.

We're going east I hope, so not much chance of seeing Siandra. I've been keeping a bit of a look out, but haven't seen the boat since the wooden boat show. They should enjoy the west coast- spent quite a bit of time there myself in fishing boats years ago. Often a bit of a chore getting across the south coast as there's usually a big swell running straight at you.

Don't reckon I'll be back here much in the next couple of days, so Merry Xmas, and enjoy your sailing!

I'm amazed that people will pay me to sail their boats. I think the fact that I take the money; morally obliges me not to talk about the deliveries on here.

And in truth they were boring. Left harbour, set the sails, got windy pulled sails down. Put em up again got to next harbour.

No weather issues? do you cross the gulf stream on that passage and if so "wots its loike?".

Hey guess what. Its tomorrow already and I just closed up the workshop. arrrrrr har har. Might even turn the cell off.
