"This is slow work and a perfect job will take many hours. I have spent over three weeks on a pair of Beckets, working evenings."
Above Excepted from Hervey Garret Smith's book " the Marlinspike Sailor"
Not enough time for me to do the fancy becket's in the book. This is a Christmas gift for my grandson,( Wyatt) a fancy toy box. Who knows maybe it will go to sea some day.
I still have to do a painting of a ship on the inside of the lid. For now, a simple rope grommet with a Turks head of two will have to do for a becket.
Thanks to all for your book referrals and suggestions.
Now those long winter evenings ............. A fancy becket. Got 3 pairs to do on other sea chests I made in the past.

Nice job.The boards are so tight that I couldn't see any jointing lines between the boards.I have a safety concern about the latch for the lock however. If the chest lid comes down the latch might strike his head. Also if he climbs inside the chest the latch might prevent him from opening the lid to climb out.Sorry to bring these points up but I have a two year old boy and I can't help being aware of safety.
The chest is so beautiful that you've inspired me to consider such a project for my own son. smile.gif

Looking great Jack. A little too un-beat-up, but maybe it needs a seaman to take it to sea? ;)
Very cool.

Yorgie,
That concern sure is valid. In another chest I made years ago for my grandaughter the first thing she did was to get into it. Now any enclosure I make for children have the latch so arranged to enable easy egress if the lid comes down while inside. smile.gif
The lid stays shown in the open position are so desighed to resist closing to the last inch or so to protect little fingers.
Mike I have that left over sweet smelling yarn in the box to give it the right smell but I'm afraid the polyethelene odor over whelms it. :(
Jack H. I'm sure my grandson will scuff it up a bit and time will give it a patina and saltiness in keeping with it's mission. :D
I made one for my self over 50 years ago from left over cedar from a cutter I built. It has just the right dings and scratches now....and the patina. Maybe this winter it will have the beckets it's earned . smile.gif

I tied a pair like that once, as a gift... Keeping all the lines straight was a nightmare, and it helps to have something to hang it on while you are tying... but I really loved how they came out...

Exactly ! Looks great!
How long did it take to make it up and how did you master the coach whipping part ? Sounds like it can be troublesome.

About 60 hours for the pair. I used Ashley's and H G Smith as a guide,
Duct tape helped, too. smile.gif
