That's right, a water gun. It is about three feet long and the children love it. You stick the end in the lake, suck up the water and then aim it at any target you like. You shoot it by shoving the plunger into the barrel.

The geese on the local lake never knew what hit 'em. :D

At the WoodenBoat Show this year there was an outfit selling a boathook/bailer that worked on the same principle. My son immedietely saw the waterfight potential of this device. :D

Thought you were referring to one of these fellows...

But water cannons work just fine as well. I was out kayaking earlier, wouldn't have minded a water gun in order to fend off a curious houseboat.

I've got one of those plunger type water guns!

When Super Soaker water guns first came on the scene my kids got them for Christmas... I got one of plunger guns. Needless to say, I was King o' the Beach although I had to stay close to my water source, and they could keep out of range. :D

But those days are gone... until grandchildren arrive. For now we just use it at beach bonfires for dousing flames when blown sparks and embers start little side fires.

Might make a better deck gun than the spud gun, which is a muzzleloader.

We've been tormenting other boats (and people within our boat and, basically, any other convenient target) with a marshmellow shooter. Takes a clip of 25 or so mini marshmellows that can be shot in rapid fire via plunger-type mechanism. Can unload the whole clip in about 5 seconds, if you're fast. Wonderful toy....

Jeff:

Give me the details on that gun of yours, it sounds like a riot!

I remember a quiet afternoon sail in my old 16' Point Jude when herd a guy on one PWC tell another "Lets just go around that sailboat". I've been looking for the perfect armament ever since. Something more effective than marshmellows, perhaps, but not nasty enoughh to land me in jail.

Use the Israeli solution: Rubber bullets.

What about a cherry tomato shooter, like say, a deck mounted slingshot/crossbow.

Enough mass to carry better than marshmallows.

MOre splatter than potatoes. Probably cheaper, too.

(Unused ammunition goes into an evening salad !)

Do they make power-washer strength portable guns to run on 12V power to use on jetskiers?

I'm STILL looking for a good swivel gun, dammit!

When I was little, I was rowing around Depoe Bay (world's smallest harbor) and all of a sudden heard something in the water beside me. Then another. I looked back, and the old guys at the fuel dock were shelling me. No matter where I rowed, I was within range. They never hit me (to many PBR's), but they came damn close a couple times!

Google spud guns and you will discover a whole world you never new existed...

My years of spud gun refinement has brought me to this.
No spud, I use a fitted pool noodle plug with a kite streamer attached. That way we can retrieve the 'spud' within 10 feet.
We load on top of this whole corn, as much as you require for the intruder. It makes a satisfying noise and stings like hell. Plus the ducks eat the evidence.

Eat this message!

Kermit - you reminded me of my own piece of ordinance I've had since high school to use on the next jetskier:

Perfect bore for a golf ball in patch cloth. I'll have to lay a nice slab of carpet on my mahogony foredeck next summer and try it out (the muzzle blast always tends to fry the grass in front of it)

Some here around the marina have souped-up water balloon launchers on board to use during races.

Those suction-based water guns are sometimes good for cleaning the boat, too.

   Golf balls! Living as I do surrounded by a golf course, I have a continuous supply of balls. But MAN, that's a pricey powder charge! :(
