Boat pics from my recent trip to Turkey. Sad thing is that most of these sailboats, don't actually do any sailing to speak of. Most of the time they spend their time motoring to destinations, as the marketing slant is not the sailing but the destination. However there is a movement afoot, ( I suspect by the local sail makers) to get the skippers to actually sail their boats.

Something a little more reasonable as far as size goes

Plenty of bright work on almost all of the boats

Are there many of these boats? Yes, and plenty being built all the time.

That's brilliant! I never would have guessed Turkey was a wooden boat haven.

Any idea what wood that is in the last pic? I don't envision Turkey being resplendent in verdure. Forests and a timber industry don't spring to mind. Although the bosphorus is a funnel for trade, so they can probably get things easier than most of us.

Thanks!

BB.
Being my first trip to Turkey I too was surprised by how green the country is. Although the interior is relatively dry, the Black Sea cost benefits from a coastal mountain range that cools the warm moist Black Sea air causing a fair amount of rain.
The woods most commonly used in boat building, most of which is locally available are:
Pine, cedar, mulberry and oak, they import teak and iroco from Africa. (This is what I was told from someone who’s first language isn’t English…so who knows? ;) )

Very nice pictures! Thanks for posting them.

I think the Bodrum boat, pictured above, needs a few more wraps on that cleat. ;)
