Somewhere in my library (which I have yet to catalogue and prepare to weed out) there is an article on making drafting ducks.
I know generally how to make 'em, but I wanted to re-read it before I start. I just can't remember where the heck I saw it!
The WB index shows a reference only to issue 161 with a review of a product for sale.
Anyone familiar with the article?
Anyone?
Anyone?

Thanks! But I'm not quite in a position to purchase a subscription just now ...
Somewhere among my books and magazines, I know I read an article about making them. I guess I'll just have to re-read everything until I find it!

AHAAAAAAAA! Gotcha, ya bast....
SS Rabl discusses all-lead ones in Boatbuilding In Your Own Back Yard, which was not the one I was thinking of.
Stephen Kessler describes his in WB #152, p 102 - also not the one I was trying to find.
The REAL DEAL:
Robert M. Steward (yes, that one) in WB #119, p 97.
Whew.

I made 12 pretty good ones a while ago....I bandsawed the required shape out of a piece of 3/4" hardwood and arranged a groove to hold a bent section of 1/8" galv wire and poured in the lead. The mould got a little charred by number 6 so I made another the same. They came out very well .I painted them and contacted glued a piece of felt onto the bottom .They worked so well a draftsman friend asked me to make him 12 too ! smile.gif
The only thing I'd do differently is use moulders greensand to cast them in so I could easily get a more interesting shape ...something like a humpback whale perhaps :D

After rereading the three references I have, I think I'm going to go with the wood with lead/epoxy filler. They'll be rather large, but at least they'll be safe and maybe even attractive!

You don't really want them big...they kind of get in the way...just cast some lead ones and paint them well. The paint on mine is still fine a year and a half later. The felt on the bottom was agood idea too .

It came out felt.

The reference was to a thread down in the bilge by Donn about the male ducks on his canal having their way with each other... ;)
