Rob's question about a slippery bowline inspired me to pull out my favorite book on knots and line, Roger Taylor's, Knowing the Ropes . No slippery bowline in it either.
The thing I like about it, and most of his writing, is that it is a distillation of years of experience. He only covers perhaps fifteen or twenty knots, hitches and splices, along with various other salient matters: care, heaving, whipping, docking etc. If you know what he says, you know virtually everything you need to know. It's only 146 pages, and includes a nice appendix of nautical terminology. He writes entertainingly to boot.
Your suggestions?
