Rob's question about a slippery bowline inspired me to pull out my favorite book on knots and line, Roger Taylor's, Knowing the Ropes . No slippery bowline in it either.

The thing I like about it, and most of his writing, is that it is a distillation of years of experience. He only covers perhaps fifteen or twenty knots, hitches and splices, along with various other salient matters: care, heaving, whipping, docking etc. If you know what he says, you know virtually everything you need to know. It's only 146 pages, and includes a nice appendix of nautical terminology. He writes entertainingly to boot.

Your suggestions?

I just bought a really interesting book at the flea market for a buck called "Piloting Seamanship and Small Boat Handling" by Charles F. Chapman. There is some good info on knots on pages 220 and 221. Your public library may have this book, mine does.
