View Full Version : Help! Scupper covers?

On my schooner the cockpit is self draining. The drains are towards the front of the cockpit on either side. Yesterday I was leaning out over the hull with a water hose rinsing off the boat and noticed that one of these drain or scupper covers on the outside of the cockpit had cracked and looks ready to fall off. This is a cast bronze piece, with a kind of tapered half-pipe on the outside that is just held on with a couple of screws. The outside diameter of the hole that it covers is close to 3".
I know that this is not much of a description but can anyone give a lead on a replacement for something like this? I am pulling the boat in a couple of months to refinish the topsides and can replace them easily at that time. I will go ahead and do both sides.
Any help would be appreciated. The 'normal' people like West and Overton's have nothing like this at all, but I am willing to bet that someone here can help me.
Thanks, Mickey Lake

Yeah, yeah. I knew you were going to ask for that. I don't have pictures and I won't be able to get back to the boat until next week. I will do what I can to measure but it may be hard without getting wet.

Can you use it to make a mold and then cast your own replacement?
You'd be surprised how many amateur blacksmiths and metalworkers there are around. You could probably get some help, and chip in a little on a local guy's equipment.
Try googling "casting bronze"...

Here's a very basic explanation---

Not bronze, but these might be able to work for you. Be sure to prime and paint.

Now THAT'S what I am talkin' about! That's a pretty close match to what's on the boat right now. The only problem that I would have is how to attach them to the side of the hull? I just see one screw hole which would fit right over the dang drain on my boat. Hmm.
I am going to buy those things. Or maybe I'll wait. Something else may present itself. But that is the basic idea I am looking for.
Thanks very much!

Mount them a bit forward of the scupper holes and water won't be driven up your bilge scuppers underway (if that's what you are trying to avoid).
Or as an alternative, copper ones come up on eBay from time to time that have mounting holes along the flange edges. They might crush and flatten more easily were they to be hit by something, however.
