Today is the annual 'Around the Island Race' wherein, as you might suspect, the entrants race around St. Croix. In years past the race was held on a single day but now they've gotten more civilized about things and race to Frederiksted on day 1 (on the West or lee end) and then back on day 2 tomorrow.
Here are the front runners: not surprisingly all multihulls

In third place at the moment, a T-Gull 23 designed by Dick Newick and being sailed for all she's worth. Her owner bought her new a few years ago after his much larger tri (and perennial winner) was destroyed during Hurricane Lenny. She's 9 minutes behind the leader...

In second place is a Farrier 31 that I don't know. She points nicely and is scooting right along. She is 4 minutes behind the leader...

And in the lead so far is Charis plus. She is wood and epoxy, she was designed and built by a friend of mine with whom I am discussing my next boat. Her predecessor (also a perennial winner) was also destroyed in Lenny and this new model seems to be performing wonderfully. She was launched a year ago or so. What sets her apart from the others, though, is that she is a dual purpose boat--she earns her kibble by running day charters to the park for sightseers. Her owner and captain is a former Calypso King -- that is to say he's a hell of a singer and musician, as well as sailor.
Enjoy!
