One of the minor scandals of our big regatta in Feb was the cancelling of a race. we were about 100metres from the finish when they stopped it in order to get everyone to regroup for the afternoon race. At the time I was pretty annoyed and others were livid. However, the afternoon race was glorious with about 10 knots and a spectacular day. We came second by 5 secs! in the afternoon race and we wouldn't have placed in the early one so..... that cancellation won us the regatta.
anyway, as I was looking for a TGIF photo, I saw this un. On the cancellation , we just luffed up, dropped the headsails and went for a swim. Please, not too many rude comments on the set. we had dumped off most anything we could, halyards, outhauls..etc for some draft.....although we'd cinched in the topsail for some reason?

John - I went rushing down to our local mazazine stands in search of the Classic Boat article on Thelma, and while not finding same, I stumbled across these in the May 2003 Classic Boat:

You're too modest. Looks like the regatta was a smashing successs. How about you save me seat in 2008?

Weell thanks me hearties. Norm sent me those pics and alerted me to their existence what? last week.. week before and that was the first I knew of em. That month hasn't arrived here yet. dya like my 25 year old genoa. we started using it for running because a foible in the rules allowed one of our competitors to run an MPS. Then we discovered that it sets quite well on the wind up to about 10 knots. It's a No 1 light off a 32ft 1970's class boat called a Cavalier 32.
Thelma is in the March edition, Margo.

Wow.... 1907 and winning, with such style!
You've sure got that foresail set and drawing. And that topsail -- doesn't it set well! I can just imagine the grip it gets on the wind.
Fast hull, lots of sail, cleverly handled and GRACE....
Why doesn't someone down there copy Waione, in carvel, and build another (or 2 or 3)? Wouldn't that be nice, to glance over and see her sister roaring along, spray flying? I know kauri is rare now, but surely there must be something else available.

Hi Dave.Every now and again someone talks of remaking one of the classic designs. Usually they would look at a Logan though, as they have a higher profile in general.
Topsail! this is the first year we've really had that thing working properly/well( on the wind) and the word is flat. Implement this word on the wind and you're in business. So flat that the peak halyard goes slack.

Hey, see the sail numbers on the genoa. They said something like 3538. I plucked the redundant numbers to get my 33.LOL. I like that sail. It's good to us . I'm going to get the clew shifted up about 18 in though, because it has a foot shelf which fills up with water. plus it's hard to see past.

Good idea.
As for the peak halyard going slack, well, there's quite a difference in curve of her mast in the top 2 pictures. That's limber timber.
Is it just the angle of the viewer?

No. It's bending Dave. It's an old dinghy mast. Hollow ,with only a 10mm wall thickness and a luff groove for the sail. weighs about 8 kg from memory. When you crack the sheet the draft comes back into the sail, which is good for a reach or run. I don't know why it's so tight on that first pic. we'd come off a run so I'd have thought we would have slacked it off. Maybe we forgot.LOL
