So a 100,000 ton ship is worth $100 million in scrap?

here is a short guide to a complex issue....

Only Naval ships are measured by their actual displacement of water, i.e. their weight.

Merchant ships are measured, as long as they are in service, either by their register tonnage, on which they pay port dues and canal dues, which is a measure of their internal volume (1 ton = 100 cu.ft) or by their deadweight tonnage which is a measure of the weight of cargo, fuel and stores which puts them down to their load line.

They are sold for scrap on their light displacement tonnage (LDT) which is their actual weight.

A ship of 100,000 tons deadweight will have a register tonnage of maybe 30,000 and a light displacement tonnage of maybe 15,000.

Ship scrap prices vary but US$120 per LDT is typical. The price per ton will depend on the type of ship (is she easy to gas axe?) and on the amount of non-ferrous metal in her (more = better)

So your 100,000 tonner might be worth US$2M.
