I just got through watching it, what a great documentery. Very well done. I read about his boat jouney, but it didn't cover the rest of his adventures very much. It is amazing how close they were to death on many occasions. I would highly recommend renting it. It has some amazing new footage of Antarctica, and some great actual filming of the original expidition.

Read Shackleton's book "South" a couple years back. This is one of the most incredible stories of survival ever. If you liked the documentary, you'll love the book.

Ditto as to great story and documentary. Especially helpful to keep things in persepctive when we drop into our "moaning chairs" at the first broken tool or problem

Alfred Lansing's Endurance is also worth a look. Probably the most readable account going.

That entire era is worth delving into; the last of the great romantic, European explorations. The chord struck still rings loud and true today. There is an immense amount of inspiring writing about it.
