View Full Version : Looking for photos of an old boat.

I am thinking of doing a restorarion of a boat which is a museum piece. The boat is smaller than what I'm used to ... but not that much smaller.
The boat is a few metres long, if I count the bow sprit and the masts are taller than me. The boat is well made, oozing with detail and the boat was made back in the 70's, as a museum piece.
So I'm looking for photographs of this boat, in particular deck detail. I need to learn how ropes on deck would have looked when the boat was actually working or racing. I'll try to enhance the ambience.
When I have been looking for photographs on the web, all I end up finding is ... nothing basically or references to golf clubs in Canada or clothing companies in Canada or Canadian coins.
If anyone can steer me towards a photo archive it would be much appreciated.
The boat is called Bluenose Lunenberg and restoring her will be a great deal of fun.
Here are a few photos of details on the boat.
Photos coming ... and I need to learn a few fancy knots and to tidy up a few of these strings.
Warren.

Warren,
I think I have a bas relief in my pocket. The Bluenose is on our dime. But as always there seems to be a but, I think the dimensions will be much larger than you describe.

I'll rework the photos so that they don't look so bad. The small photos are not showing the detail at all well, I've reduced their size far too much and lost all of the shadow detail and fine details ...which does not do her builder justice.
I'm still looking for deck details. For such an important boat the photos are very ordinary, I'm finding.

email or otherwise catch the attention of MMD. He lives right there and is somehow associated with Bluenose II.
Hwyl, you credit me too much - I am only associated to the ship through geographical location and interest. I do, however, have quite a bit of info on the old girl, including a set of Commodore Jensen's measured drawings of the ship.

Thankyou Hwyl and mmd. This will help a good deal. There are a couple of piles of fine sawdust (frass?), under this boat ... something could be eating the hull.
There is one good photo of the sheets coiled on the deck, that will help smarten up her look.
I'll also visit the Canadian Embassy here in Canberra and have a chat to the Librarian.

Bluenose II will be in Lunenburg next week from Tuesday thru Sunday, so if you need a photo or two of some such detail, let me know. I can always find an excuse to crawl around the waterfront and oogle boats.

Cheers Michael, that's very nice of you to offer. I'm hoping not to impose to that extent.
I'll take a few more photos of the details that have been disturbed on the boat. There are a few bits of detail that just aren't right, like in the first photo that I posted. That's why I posted the shot, because of the string.
I notice that Bluenose now has a blue boat cover on her life boats (?). I won't go there.

First, they're fishing dories not lifeboats. Second see if someone at the Canadian Embassy has a dime handy. Third, get this book. It's got enough detail to make any modeller happy.

Norm, G'day, in different photographs different boats appear on deck I've noticed. The model has three Dories stacked in each other.
This photo is more faithfull to the model, rather than the previous images that I took under room lighting, that display colour casts.

That topsail looks completely wrong. I'll comment on it tomorow.
Michael, is Warren's model Bluenose 1 or 2?

Hi Warren. You probably know this, but one of the most critical things about restoring an important model is to know what moment in time it represents. It's hard to tell from these shots if she's Bluenose I or II, because other than the presence of a radar dome on II, there is little difference in the 2 rigs. If there is a propellor, then she's BN II. If she's BN I, then 2 banks of dories would be correct, likely uncovered. If she's BN II, then fewer dories and one or two other boats would be correct, not to mention the inevitable self-inflating liferaft pod.
I agree with HWYL there's something odd about the topsail (the jackstay on its foot doesn't make sense) and the blocks seem a tad oversize, but otherwise a very nice bit of work.
I have a great original photo of BN I heeled down on a reach with water over the rail, plus a few good reference books, including the one I mentioned above. I won't be home until tomorrow, but it's no problem to scan pages if it would help.

OOps, well a day late. Yep I don't know what that jackstay is for, unless there is a club on the topsail and it's part of that. No clubs in this picture.

Also the tack should be the other side of the mainsail, it sould be tacked down the opposite side to where it lies in relation to the peak halyard of it's lower sail (American style) easier done than written.

Warren, I just sent a document to your email address. It's a plan of BN I with good rigging detail. Let me know if it's too big and I'll send a compressed version.

Hwyl, not a drama at all Mate. I couldn't get onto the Forum for a period yesterday, until late last night, for some unknown reason. So I went for a bush walk it was raining. I don't paint when it rains. I was thrown right out yesterday because of the rain, it doesn't often rain. Thankyou for your trouble. By the time I've done this job, I should know a few more boat terms.
Thankyou to everyone who has taken an interest.
Norm, the restoration is a restoration of her aesthetics, apart from the sawdust being addressed (if the sawdust is from the boat) and a few other small bits of damage that need little work to put right.
Thankyou for the email. Truely brilliant.
Most of the drama is 30 years of dust on the boat, dead insects and fly spots and why she is so dishevilled. Despite being behind glass, she looks like kids have been playing with her. Raising and lowering the sails etc.
I should also mention that this is not a commercial job. I'm not gaining financial advantage through people's generosity. I have enough information now, thanks to you all, to confidently take this job on.
On another note, if people visit Canberra, don't overlook visiting the Australian War Memorial if you have a real passion for model boats. The model boat displays are somewhat overwhelming ... from fishing boats and inter island traders to war ships. Not to mention some small boats that that were actually used in the wars, that are being remembered at the Memorial.
Warren.
