Jeezus! Those photos must be from the Shields Nationals held recently off Edgartown , Martha's Vineyard. I've sailed there before in just those conditions in Solings and Wianno Seniors, and it can be nasty.

Looks like those guys were sailing too much by the lee with the big chutes wobbling around and (obviously) causing some hairy deathrolls.

Olin Stephens, the Shields designer, said that was one of the boat's weaknesses that had to be guarded against.

Yeah, death rolls ain't no fun...I'm amazed that first boat didn't keep going right to the bottom. It looks like many of the fast boats are running with 5 crew. That's a lot of people stuffed on a Shields.

I wonder if they ever raised that Shields that nose-dived to the bottom of Lake Michigan about 10 years ago.
