Okay, here's the question:
Old fire houses had towers, new fire houses don't.
How come?

Exacto. Moreover, the hoses were canvas and if not properly dried before storage would rot.

In Oz we still use 70mm canvas. Over here we just hang them up to dry usually in the rafters above the vehicles. All other sizes are plastics.

Actually, most hoses had a double jacket made of cotton. New hose has a synthetic jacket.
