What is it? Reference was made in the latest WB, but I don't know what it is or what it is used for, and why it is thusly named.

?? maybe rotten stops?
Weak stops for securing a sail so that it doesn't break out until its hoisted. Like rubberbands on a spinnaker.

Rotten stops were made of cotton twine that had been treated with acid to weaken the fibers. It was in use since the early days of America's Cup racing and the heydays of Herreshoff. But I doubt that it is still available. It used to be a standard item at marine supply chandlerys. Now that we are forced to shop at "Boat Boutiques" it has fallen by the board along with a lot of other practical gear and supplies.

If you still have underwear from 1969, like I do, it could probably be cut into strips for stopping off your chute. :D I Can't figure out why my wife is always trying to throw it away when she thinks I'm not looking....
