This oddball auger bit is listed on ebay. Anyone know what it's for?

Just a guess, but it would do a fine job of cutting the recess for a deck filler pipe in a wooden deck. Why someone would make a tool for this purpose, however, eludes me.

I dunno if the description is correct.

Looks to me that the set screw allows the counterbore to slide up and down on one "land" of the bit probably in a milled slot on the inside of the counterbore.

Nut on top could have been for use in a auger handle. A wooden T shaped handle with a central opening for the bit with small metal plates on top and bottom to reinforce the wood socket.
Nut might have been used to afix the auger in place.

Jes' guessin' mind ye.

The nut on the end is to secure a "T" handle, rather than a brace.

Stanchions?

(Wheesht! cross posted with that left coast geezer ;) ...)

There might be some parts missing. It almost looks like some sort of a ratchet. Maybe for boring in a corner. The small nut doesn't look original (or particularly useful).

Hunk of junk that was once useful to somebody for something. If you don't need it, don't buy it. Jennings screw tipped augers are a dime a dozen.

I wasn't gonna buy it, for Pete's sake! I was just curious ;)

It's a holesaw with a really big starter bit!
