View Full Version : My Waterfront
Now that I've finally figured out how to post pictures, I'd like to show you folks my pride and joy. This is the western shore of Unity Pond or Lake Winnecook, depending on who you ask... The boat on the mooring is my new to me 1954 Rhodes 18. The sailboat in the foreground is made out of that other stuff, but if the sun hits it right you can see plank lines from the boat that was used for a mold. Also an aluminum rowboat.
Now show me yours!

Pleasant Bay this summer. Looking more or less due South. Strong Island to the left, Sipson Island to the right. If you keep going S you'll get to Chatham and the inlet to the Atlantic.

My canal, and my boardwalk covered with this year's wintersown plants. The boathouse is at the far end of the boardwalk, and the Great South Bay is ~200 yards down the canal.
Not exactly waterfront but yesterday we put a bid on a house that is only about 10 minutes away from this bay. We're already kayaking here and next year we will be sailing our Glen-L Minuet:

Considering we've come from Alberta where we were an hour's drive to the nearest puddle big enough to float a boat it is a definite improvement.

This is how it looked when I was a kid back in 1965. The Coast Guard abandoned her, so she became my hangout. :D It was a great place to watch boats, right in the shipping channel. ;)
Lots of work done lately, she's in much better shape now and there's talk of buying her lens back and lighting her up.

The beach was at "Lakeview Park" two blocks from home.

In her slip, must of been summer with all the cruisers around. Lot's of whining bow thrusters during that time of the year. ;) Now she's surrounded by her kind...

If I could just get past these things, I could show you some waterfront.

ps, ... or the spot that I like to put-in. Lake Barely Sailable (aka Lotus Bay, Lake Burley Griffin).

Hey, JMAC, what's the sailing like on Unity Pond. I've been so busy rowing around the Bangor/Orono area, I haven't ventured south for a couple of years.

I don't know when in my life I've been so depressed to live in the midwest... And I used to think it wasn't all that bad. Ha, ha! (Hollow laughter I can assure you!)
Wow!!!! Some pretty magnificent photos here. Sailing on Unity Pond is a great way to spend a day. It's roughly 1 1/2 miles by 3 1/2 miles. There are some shallow areas which are mostly marked with bouys. There's a good boat launch in Unity with a swimming beach next to it. The wind seems to shift dramatically some days. Some sort of tell-tale makes everything easier. I'm close enough where I can decide I want to go for a sail and be on the boat 5 minutes later, I love it!

Seems like everyone heads to the Island sooner or later. It is our goal as well. Congrats.

I posted this on another thread, but these pix really apply mostly to 'My Waterfront'...
We have a rarity, the 'working club', where it won't cost you money to keep your boat in the water, only time, 35 hours a season to be exact...
The Village owns the land, has leased it (for a nominal fee) to the Boat Club since 1955...Any resident of the Village is gauranteed membership, though slips are assigned on a seniority basis...
I love the deal, because a workin' man can afford the slip fees...It keeps out the faint of heart, cause you can't simply pay your way out of work...a real camaraderie develops when you're all gettin' muddy together...
It is a lot of work, though...but cheap in relation to what you get..

Hey, HR, the HoDoMaRaCo (Howard & Donna Marine Railway Company) construction looks like it has made headway. Has the rain messed with your dirtpile much? Will you be ready for haul-out before the coming hard water season?
Caramel 'n' I need to come down and inspect, y'know. :D

Your own marine railway - how cool is that? :D
Steven
The "railway" is coming along nicely. The lower tracks are sitting on the pad waiting to get a cross piece welded between them at the bottom (thought it would be a good idea to have something to keep the cradle from sliding too far smile.gif ), then we'll slide them down and put the rest of the track on the pad and bolt everything in place. Hopefully it will all be done by next week, and we'll haul out sometime in November.
The dirt pile is fill that was dug out to get the right slope on the concrete slab - it's going into Donna's garden. Best Nova Scotia soil I've ever seen (as in, few rocks!).
Howard
PS Forgot to add, open for inspection any time!

This waterfront has been 'my waterfront', for the last few days. I'm painting a keel and took the shot from where I've been working. During the week the lake is very peaceful.

Lake Barely Sailable and the spurs leading to Black Mountain Peninsular. When the wind comes over the mountain and then descends a 1000ft into the basin, vertically ... take care, it is much disturbed. Watching a race from here on Wednesday evening while I worked, I felt much happier to be working ... so many boats went over, I had a quiet chuckle.
Warren.
