Decided to leave. I am not bitter I simply prefer not to stay. Reasons ? To sucumb to the temptation of airing my views.....Unfortunately I find the content of the majority of what is posted these days silly; it seems to me that posts are often variously negative, showing off, homophobic, insulting, jingoistic, insincere, sarcastic, patronsing etc etc or otherwise written by people with simply too much time on their hands or nothing better to do. A lot of is written by what I regarded by "serious minded" contributors with something positive to contribute but who have - perhaps without wishing to do so - perpetuated what I would regard as not having a place on a forum I personally invovle myself in. What a shame that is and for a Forum with (initally) so much to offer.
Thanks for the help to those that helped with questions in the past. For anyone who would like to stay in contact please post on this thread and I will be delighted to stay in touch.
Happy sailing !

My friend... and I do consider you that Maybritt... Somehow I believe you're sincere in your reasons and intent which is sad... I appreciate all youve given to myself personally and to the forum as a whole since Ive been here and wish it were not to be but can appreciate your reasons... hopefully I wasnt a causal effect in your decision to leave but if I was somehow in some way involved accept my apologize...
It would be appreciated by myself if you would keep in contact.

-"here" being the forum generally I assume?, not boat related, where you have posted. Why not just ignore the bilge, or even ignore both misc sections, and stick with the "serious" sections, designs, and building and repair. They remain true, gentlemanly and largely unsullied by the silliness you complain of. I might start a club for members whose registration number is 2000 or less, "the old gaurd"

I agree Phil, I'd be sorry to see Matbritt become a casualty too. Spend less time, ignore th rubbish, it's easy to distinguish, but don't toss the baby out with the bathwater. Please

What have you done to make things better?
I'll be the first to agree that things have gotten out of control but, civil disscussion is still possible for those that are willing to look for it. There are some great minds in here. Scrape the cream off the top and leave the rest. Please reconsider.

My strategy has been to simply ignore the MISC. section. There is still a lot of value in the other sections. Rick
Sorry to see you go, Maybritt. Can't say as I blame you, though. :(

Interesting that May chose to post his negative view, of what is surely of just one section of the forum, in a section that almost never, if ever, lives up to his discription of us. :( I, too, am sorry to see him go but cold turkey may be the only way. Try as I might to ignore some folks in the Bilge, after 20 or 30 posts to such a thread it is extremely hard not to look to see why others are not ignoring them as well. Different ignore lists for different folks, eh.

Stick around, Maybritt. When I get disgusted with some of the nonsense I just skip what I don't want to get involved in.
Everyone has something to contribute, and in my ignorance I could use each and every contribution that could be made!

Each and every member here has something to contribute, some judge it as good, others as bad.
But with all it's faults, it's stilll a good place overall.
Each and every Forumite has 100% control of the Forum by the click of one finger. That's all it takes.
Stay aboard. smile.gif

Happy sailing !Well yes,,,,, but it's not as though it matters , Like talk in a bar or yesterdays news papers it's here today and nowhere tomorrow.
Serious stuff like varnishing methods or the best way of punishing epoxy users likewise evaporates into the great blue (screen) yonder. This is only a small forum among thousands of others. No one is listening exept just us chickens.
Stay or go, as you wish, but going changes nothing, staying might,,,,,,,, or not.

Sorry to see you go. I see people come and go to this forum. I think its a huge resource for wooden boats. I also feel that like everything else in this world it is cyclical, meaning the threads go from one extreme to the other, positve to negitive. The cycle we are in now is because the whole world is in termoil. This to shall pass. When I get tierd of this forum I just go away for a while and come back when I feel like it. This section on WB Forum gets alot more activity than the rest which is a curious thing to me. I hope you and other just take a break for a while. All the best to you. PS. I do wish that the name calling, insults and the like would stop...... but they wont. Dale

Maybritt, can you give us a blank screen so we at least know you're listening, this is kind of like talking to an accident victim in a coma. We won't count it as a post, I promise.

I too have no interest in the Misc Non Boat Related threads, and simply never go there anymore, not even to look.
I'm really glad that sections exists. It cleaned up the rest of the Forum nearly completely.

Misc. Non is gradually turning into a 24-hour a day Hate Radio Call-in Show. I don't blame you for ducking out.
But the rest of the forum is in fine form. Don't quit the WBF...just stay out of the bilge.

Some good advice there Maybritt, there's no real need to leave. There is only one Wooden Boat Forum and you sir are member #1063.
If you think things here are bad, wait till the shooting match in Iraq is over and the troops stop off in Singapore and HK for a bit of R 'n R. You'll be crying in your beer then!

Why is 2000 and below such an elite club??? Maybe I should leave also, since I belong to the insignificant "new guard."

Oops sorry, just a sily thought. No exclusivity here. All welcome. I was just yearning for the good old days when the most vilest filth ever encountered was Bob Cleek bluntly explaining his views on fibreglasssing a wooden boat, laying teak decks over ply, or applying paint straight from the can.

Yes, Phil, those were violent and repugnant days, weren't they?

Maybritt - This portion of the WBF has become quite disappointing, AM talk radio indeed sums it up pretty nicely. But, as was previously pointed out by Mr Burke, all that is required for evil to triumph is for good [people] to do nothing. If people would consider themselves as visiting within our host's livingroom this would likely be a more hospitable place.
Now Phil -

Like some others,I don't understand why this is posted here in Misc boat related. We all know you take your chances in misc non boat.
I can't recall offhand the political, racist or otherwise offensive threads in this section which would make you want to leave.
this is a good place.

Hi Maybritt
I have to agree with you, but the other members also. As most say, ignore the misc. non boat related section and the forum is a fantastic place for information and GOOD BOAT DISCUSSION.
Sometimes however, i think our egoes (sp) are bruised. Reference all the posts in this thread about what number an individual is. Does it really matter? I don't post much, but I read a lot of posts. Even non boat related has some good stuff frequently. My good wife always says "don't show (your) ignorance, by responding to someone else's ignorance." Sort of how I view a great deal of the MISC. NON BOAT STUFF.
Please hang in there and read with me, and throw in some useful information every now and then.
Bob

I haven't posted in weeks. Well, at least a couple. And it's not all about the Forum and what it's become. Much has to do with the world's effect on a fellow still harboring some fair bit of 70's PTSD.
But much has to do with the Forum's demonstrating that one can own a woodenboat and still be many of those things Maybritt mentioned.
I just don't have time for the world's garbage, and, sadly, it's entered here. I may visit again in a few.

I dont know what half the people in miscelaneous have for interest in wooden boats. I've been guilty of hammering on them but it doesnt work well. They're still narrow minded americans who like to bomb people as far as I can see

People can own a wooden boat and still have real life opinions on every day issues. You will find infighting in every group, everyday that you breathe, Darryl.

The following is a copy of a recent post on the "People and Places" section of the Forum.
Before you leave us, Maybritt, I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts on it.
"I notice we have participants here who are well-acquainted with Hong Kong, but what about Singapore, of which I have seen little mention?
Comments on Singapore itself, and on its harbor as a cruising harbor would both be of interest.
Anyone?
Alan"
Thanks, Maybritt, for any help you're able to lend,
Alan
