I mean Ive got this loverley possumpoop the purveyor of all me weird tangents who wouldnt destroy a dream for all the tea in china... but shes started this "uuummm yes dear aaahhh suppose so" caper whenever I sit and go through me plan sets tryin to decide which to builded... and when I mutter about how I justs gots ta build one she tends to shake her pretty noggin and say "but why not just buy one? theres bunches of fibreglass boats for sale at less than building one will cost" and I go into a state of total appolexy at the mere thought... and she goes "aaahhh oohh well tis but a thought me dearest"
Somehow methinks she be turnin off the idea of building a boat!! ooh she will no doubt support me in me adventure but just spend a fair whack of time shakin her pretty noggin and goin "tut tut mad the poor buggar me darls has gone totally troppo tis sad indeed"
Am I alone in me quandry of a missus who wants a boat but is getting worried about the time delay thing and of course listening to those with f******s boats who say "wooden boat? hes gonna what?!!! hes mad that stuff sinks!" yep dont know how many times Ive had that one thrown at us  ...ooohh the arguments debates and discussions that have been had with f******s steel Aliminum boat owners and such since me adventure began :(
So how many of yous fellas are in the same "boat"?

Sorry Dingo :(
My wife totally supports my wooden boat disease.
maybe you could meet your wife half way and
restore a nice wooden boat.I think that can
be just as rewarding as building one from scratch.
although Im not done building my Sharpie yet...

Nothing wrong with fibreglass, or steel, or ally. Well, actually I guess there's something wrong with all of them, including wood. I tend to think people with epoxy ply boats pretending to be puritanically traditionalist probably need to get out more. But its horses for courses isn't it? Depends what you want. There's enough to disagree on in the world without making enemies on the basis of preferences for boatbuilding materials.

As you know Phil I do actually agree with you... its just that working with timber is so much better than with those other substances  ...and a part of any adventure is the getting there I also seem to be getting an aversion to looking at other peoples boats for sale so my only option is to build... ah well shes a sweet wee thing she'll be right! ;)
On tuther and... I just got some MAJOR parcels!!! man am I one hell of a happy chappy by gar! ... well till she gets home and sees it all of course then I think I may be doin some serious duckin and weevin  ... till she settles down again then Im gonna have to break the news that more are coming!!! tongue.gif how shes gonna take that is any bodies guess  ...and Ive still got a couple more up my must have list!

When I retired a neighbor Mark, asked what I was going to do with my time. I said I thought I'd check around the neighborhood for a stay at home mom and see what developed. Of course, Mark told Phyllis what I said, as I was sure he would, so right away she started urging me to get started building a boat. Ya gotta work these things right, Shane.
Now, what is your objective here. If building is primary as it was with me that settles it. If building is a means to an end then that is a different story. The quickest, least expensive way to go sailing is to buy a second hand boat, seems to me.
What will your situation be four or five years from now? I worked pretty much full time on Prairie Islander for four and half years. Took a few months off for a broken leg and slowed down a bit dragging a bum hip around toward the end but still, time flys when you're having fun.
Buy a boat, do some sailing and continue to plan toward building the dream boat. The planning is half the fun, eh? Then when you build you will have the best of both worlds.

aahh Norm me ol cobber this be precisely what I done did!! first I mucked about and built the legendary canoeythingy to get me started then I bought a trailer which had a f*****s cat attached to it with sails for free so Ive covered the have to do stuff... so now me times me own... sorta...
I reckon I can take me time with building what I want now... but its "er indoors" she cant see herself hangin out on a hull goin at breakneck speed on the cat and twiddlin around on the canoe bored the blazes out of her the one time she got aboard... so shes sayin "I wanna go sailin yer dopey mug get me a boat" and Im sayin "go charter one then yer silly sheila" but betixt and between it all time is sorta on our side for a build... as long as I keep meself grounded!
