Waione has lots of nice photographs taken by Jason on Friday because he was so busy chasing us down, overtaking us and finishing ahead. Then they ( Rawene) did a horizon job on us on Saturday but yesterday,... we left THEM behind in the lighter stuff so we don't have to feel tooooo bad.
Great pics Jase. I only have 2 or 3 of you guys because I was hanging on to the helm for grim death and cracking the whip on the crew.
Thanks for the winter cheer, Jase. Some great photos.

What a fleet! Pic # 92 is especially good IMO. Is that the schooner 'Alcyone'?

Nope... that would be the Alden Schooner "Arcturus" (a 390 I think) she screamed past us and we never saw her again that day... she seems to love the heavy stuff.... sunday we ate her for breakfast while JohnB ate us for lunch :D
Pin the topsail on the gaffer, shake that reef out at the very least. Are you man or mouse?

There is some irony in that shot of Waione, we flew the topsail and no reefs all day and were overpowered and playing follow the leader with JohnB until that final downhill run to the finish where we shot through the fleet in semi control :D and pipped him at the post by about 40 seconds :D

Mouse definitely :D . we had some pretty serious control issues in that sea and that last run down to the finish on the friday and we did not want any more sail out. If only I was configured to set a topsail on a reefed main ...... hmmmmmmm. ooo yeah.

I'm just messing with John.
If I were to offer serious advice I would have tended to get that jib poled out a little better, even if it entailed bearing away a little.
Maybe I should sell the house, abandon the kids and buy that boat down the steet. Sail over and join in the fun.

We thought about poling it out but it would have been very shy. What you see is the boat surfing down ( you know how cameras always flatten out the sea state)and it backing as we accelerated. Also , the boat was yawing a lot when the seas got under the counter so she was hard to steer. Actually dammit. you're right. we should have poled it.
It was frustrating watching her just creep up and sneak on by but they deserved it the way they sailed .well done .

Hwyl, do you know the West Solents class? Peter Brookes brought his out for its first sail on the thursday and raced the 3 days. Natica won at Cowes week last year. First time one has ever sailed out here I'd imagine. good to see.

I missed out on a lot of the interesting local classes. Royal Anglesey Fife class for instance.

John here's a thought. Just for down wind stuff. How about a top sail with top yard only but no jack yard. Would that be easier. When every one seemed to be reefing on day 2 jay was getting us to fly a topsail. No spars, easy as. Although I did almost go for a swim tying to get a line out over the boom so we could run it forward to the sheet and bring it to the windward side for hoisting. i was leaning on the main sheet when the boat lurched to leeward and the sheet went slack. The sphincter tightened for sure.

If you want to lug more than one topsail around with you, why not.thats what they used to do. I think the idea of making the one topsail do both jobs would suit us and all I have to do is come up with the alternative halyard position.
John, whats the link that john R sent you? it didn't show up on your email.....

Jase, the bent in your mast (John B's photo hereabove) frightens me a bit  ...and the yard may be worse!!!
