Is anyone away of a source for used charts for Maine coastal areas?

What do you want to use them for? Not navigation, I hope...

I went into the restroom at a local restaurant a while ago and found that they had repapered the walls and ceiling with old nautical charts. I spent so much time looking at them my wife thought I'd fallen into the toilet or caught myself in my zipper!

Try your local chandlery, such as Hamilton's in my neck of the woods. Out of date charts they can't sell, so they will cut out the corner containing the chart # and other assorted info, and discard. A friend of mine once got a box of them big enough to paper his house many times over.

We are going to vacation on Georgetown Island this summer and I just wanted a chart to get a bit more connected to the area. I believe the two that cover that area are #13295 (small scale) and #13293 (large scale). You're right that I could just purchase them, but I was looking for a cheaper way out since I won't be navigating with them.

I probably have an old one of at least one of these.
Charts in an automobile format are becoming available - cover a large area and fold like a road map. One might be available that covers what you want - we now often use one of these on the boat. Can't tell you publisher at the moment - may be the ChartPak folks.

If you just want something to look at, try this site:
mid-coast chart finder (http://mfengine.nos.noaa.gov/scripts/esrimap.dll?name=MapServer&Left=1701868.&Bottom=4135748.&Right=1814368.&Top=4210748.&ZFOpt=2x&Cmd=Find&radius=Current+Screen&charts=1&ThmL bl=charts&SD=1800&ED=2001&MS=0&MX=150%2C000&click1.x=237&click1.y=136)

Oops, that didn't work. Not sure what happened. Try copying this URL (all of it, not just what's underlined) and pasting it into the address bar:

I’m not sure if Donn’s enigmatic post reflects suspicion about the link I offered (is that some forum convention I’m not aware of?), but I should probably have given a bit more background. The link (sorry it messes up the formatting of this thread, but the URL-insert button would not accept such a long address) takes you to NOAA’s mid-coast Maine chart finder page in their MapFinder website.
If you click on the GIF button to the left of the number and name of the chart you want, you will get a very nice full-sized scanned image of that chart. If you have access to a large scale printer or plotter, you could print the image. The red “not for navigation” warnings are a bit distracting, but otherwise the chart is excellent.
The posts weren't meant to be enigmatic, JL. When a post with such a long link is the most recent post in a thread, the long link skews the "today's active topics" page that I use to monitor the forums.
AHA! The reason the link won't post is because it contains UBB code "[/URL]"

Donn,
Thank you for explaining your post (that makes a ton of sense) and for discovering why the URL won't appear properly. Still not sure how to correct it.
But, here's (http://mapfinder.nos.noaa.gov/default.html) the home page for NOAA's mapfinder. Navigating to the correct spot is tricky and I can't now remember how I did it.
